Accidently crossed battery wires, after charging. started truck....saw smoke coming from wire to alternator. ???"is the wire just burnt, or do I need to replace alternator??? truck starts up still.

The wire connected to the alternator is a fusible link (wire that is designed to burn or melt just like a fuse). Cut out damaged section & splice in a new section. Most likely alternator is still ok.

Did you cross the battery cables ? if you did you will have burnt out the alternator and computer plus shorted out some wiring . Take to the dealer to get it sorted.
the alternator , battery , or starter has burnt out or has a short to earth , wire may be rubbing on chassis some where, trace the wire that you saw smoke from and make sure its not worn through etc , at the least i would say a new alternator and battery is required , without seeing the vehicle its hard to be specific, hope this helps , also will need to check the fuse box's for any blown fuses , make sure you've located that smoking wire
The new alternator is probably ok. I would say you burned a fuseable link in the wiring harness. The alternator has a fuse wire between it and the battery to protect it from overload. Have someone check the wires coming out of the back of the alternator. The big wire should have battery voltage, the small wires energize the alternator when you start the engine.
You may have gotten the +pos and -neg cables crossed, causing the fusable link wire to burn out.
Check for the burned link wire between the alternator and the battery side of the starter solenoid on
top of the right fender well, and splice in a new fusable link wire, any parts store should have this.
The fusable link is there to protect the charging system from damage when things like this happen.
But once it's running be sure to check the charging system. Hope this helps.
If there is power to the big wire that is bolted on to the back of the alternator and no power out of the small wires that plug in to the alternator then it is possible you need to replace your alternator. start the vehicle and check to see if there is 14 volts at the battery while the vehicle is running if there is then the alternator is good if not replace your alternator and charge your battery with a charger to make sure you have a proper charge on the battery.
Have you checked to see if your alternator is charging now and is your solenoid burnt or blown will it crank over? these would be ideal locations to start test battery to to see what it is holding for charge level. Sometime local automotive part stores offer a test program in store like canadian tire test it before you replace it bring in the part and test it!! are you in Canada?
