Car, Montana 2002, began rough starts (fuel pump not turning on at ignition), it was an intermittent problem, then sometimes not starting for days. Mechanic ran an extra wire from a nearby fuse socket to wire going to fuel pump to bypass fuel pump relay (replaced but apparently not the problem). Car ran well for a few months, but started having hard starts and then periods of not starting again. Car has just finished a two month cycle of running without out a problem and starting to have hard starts again. What is the problem: new fuel pump relays did not help, though computer diagnostics pointed to it.

Check ground wires, add a couple extra, can't hurt is cheap and in most cases fixes the type of issues you described

SOURCE: Fuel Pump Relay Switch

Underneath your hood, behind the passenger side headlight, behind the core support, is a bank of 2-8 relays. One of those relays is the relay needed for your fuel pump. There will also be a fuel pump relay fuse located there. The relay designation should be on the cover of the relay compartment.

If you replaced the fuel pump then there is a possibility that during the job then some debris from the tank and/or filter got loose somewhere into the fuel system and is in your lines. It could even be a very tiny speck of gasket material, old or new.

Is the security light active? If yes it will have to get reprogrammed by the GM dealer as GM has this as a propriatory system... Meaning no one else can work on it.

Te magna fuel pump or relay??

Sometimes your key will magically lose communication with the ignition you can take your car to a dealer and they can reprogram for about $60 regulators are pretty cheap starting about$13
i would try that first very much doubt it's the fuel pump
but you can check this just by turning you key to acc and you will hear the pump kick in to bring fuel up to the rails and cut out .

have the fuel pressure and volume tested with a gage.this sounds and acts like a fuel pump problem.check the fuel filter as well and replace anyways.when it won`t start but cranks can you hear the fuel pump running.listen at the fuel filler neck with the gas cap off.if you can`t listen under the car at the fuel tank you should hear it running/if not hit the gas tank and if the car starts then the pump needs replacing.you should check to make sure you are getting spark at the spark plugs to eliminate an ignition problem but i think its fuel.

Changed fuel pump and fuel filter, now x5 2002 won't start

1. use scanner to find out if there's trouble code.

2.. it's not clear if the starter (motor) turns as you try to start the engine, if not, check starter motor including intermittent (maybe) problem with the ignition switch.

3.if starter motor turns everytime you try to start: check the electrical ignition system: coils & spark plugs

Try using some starting fluid in the intake pickup; continue spraying while someone starts the car. If the car starts up, the fuel pump has gone bad.

I have a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am. Earlier this year it began having starting problems and I learned that the fuel pump was not turning on sometimes when i put the ignition switch to on. (wouldnt hear it) ...

It is most likely the Ignition switch. I have replaced several for this exact simptoms.
To check it, you test the power for the fuel pump relay.
When the ign switch starts acting up it will not power up the fuel pump relay portion of the fues box.
You can check it with a test light.
On a day when it starts and runs fine, pull the fuel pump relay, turn key on and probe the socket with test light and make note which ones have power to them.
Then one day, when it dont start, dont turn the key off yet, pull the relay, and retest, and compare.
If there is no power where there used to be power, replace the ignition switch.
Hope this helps
If it does please leave some testimony

Intermittent starting problem

Did you replace ignition leads? What about air intake leaks. Air = fuel. No air = no fuel = no start.

2002 Pontiac Montana, I ran out of gas. Put in about 6-7 gal. Now it will not start up. Please help.

TRY TURNING THE KEY ON AND OFF WHILE LISTENING TO THE HUM OF THE FUEL PUMP. THIS WILL CYCLE THE FUEL PUMP ON TO PRESSURIZE THE FUEL LINES. IF YOU DON'T HEAR THE FUEL PUMP KICKING ON THEM CHECK THE FUSE FOR IT, UNDER THE HOOD. HOPE THIS HELPS WITH YOUR DILEMMA. LET ME KNOW. BEST OF LUCK

1990 190E auto turns over but doesn't ever catch

My car is a 1993 190e 2.6
For Zero dollars you should check the Over Voltage Protection fuse before spending any more money. When burnt out this thing can really cause some strange things to happen example: ABS light on, low rough idle speed, difficult or no starting without a "jump". My battery was new, the starter and alternator were fine. I was Lucky enough to know an expert he took one look at it swaped that fuse and all was good. Immediatly good idle, ABS light went out, Car starts great.
Check it first!
By the way you can change the brushes on your starter with out even removing it from the car.
