Don't be fooled by all of the advertising hype. The three most important factors are the API rating, the proper viscosity, and the frequency at which you change the oil. I have never gotten less than 150K miles out of a car (I currently own 4, each with more than 150K miles) and I have never had any oil-related issues. There is virtually no sludge in my engines. Today you should look for an API rating of 'SN' for gasoline engines. I buy the cheapest 'SN' rated oil I can find and I change it every 3500 miles. Use the viscosity recommended in your owner's manual.
THE best oil is AMSOIL, but since it's $12/qt I now use Rotella T6 (synthetic) from Walmart
The best oil for Audi 1.9 TDI is CASTROL 0W30 SLX Longlife II (TDI Pump Nozzle) VW Norm 506.01 . This oil is issued by Castrol special for TDI - Pumpe Duse (Pump Nozzle) engine as longlife oil (50,000 km service interval, or two years).
Also a normal service oil (15,000 kmservice interval, or one year) is Castrol TXT 5W40, and Castrol EDGE 5W30, for TDI Pump Nozzle engines, VW Norm 505.01.
