My 1997 Golf GTI 16V cuts out when warm. Diagnostics didn't show a specific fault but the mechanic said he had this problem before and he thinks it is the crank shaft sensor. He replaced it 2 weeks ago and it seemed to run for longer than it had done before. It is off the road at the moment but yesterday i took it for its MOT and it kept cutting out again when it got warm. As soon as it cools you can restart it but when it warms up it cuts out again.... What could it be?

SOURCE: vw golf mark 2 1.8 gti 16v is hard to get in to

Sounds like you will need new shifter links, there are only available from a VW dealer and easy to install. There are two of them, they are usually white (when not covered in dirt) and plastic. They snap into place on to the metal rods for your sifter linkage (located on the back of the trany by the fire wall) when these get worn badly it makes it hard to shift into certain gears not all gears tho. A good indentation that these are worn out is a sloppy shifter. Also the linkage should be lubed up to make it easier to shift, if your shifter is not sloppy then try lubing up each link (think there is 6 pivot points) even the main slide link. Let me know if that helps.

Does a 1.4 16 v vw golf have a maf

this is a later model and not a 1999 and as such it may need the engine diagnostics reading as such this vehicle has to be connected to the internet via dealers digital signature to source the problem ,even if you know what part you need and change it then it still needs programming in to the car computer this is out of the realms of a weekend mechanic and for that matter even a mechanic like myself ,so you will gin and bear it and pay the dealer and get used to this as the newer the car then the less can be done to it by anyone except the dealership.

I drive a 1997 golf 3 GTI 16V. The car can't start when the oil temperature goes beyond 88 degrees celsius from the onboard computer, I have to wait for it to cool down for a while before starting. What...

Did you resolve this?
I drive a mk3 golf GTI 8V and mine starts fine but after driving for about 3 minutes (engine warms up) it starts to misfire, the car stalls and then you can't start it again until the engine has cooled. Does this sound similar?

GOLF MK3 NON START

check for 12v at injector plug if no 12v this is fed from the ecu so backtrack all fuses and ecu feeds
you may need new ecu control unit but be sure to check all 12v feeds and earths etc

My car wont start

if it starts and cuts out straight away. it is most likely an immobilizer problem. an electronic diagnostic test would pin point the problem as it would store afault in the memory.

My fan belt on ma golf gti 16v is makeing a chucking noise and needs replaced.

We also agree with you, if making noise it should be replaced.

RECOMENDATION:
Go back to your dealer and use the factory original belt.

Hope this tip helps.
