The warning means the computer does not "see" the right signal from the key. Your key has a chip that prevents a thief from stealing the truck with an ordinary key or by bypassing the lock. If you have another key try it, if not check with the dealer or a locksmith.
Did you check the battery of the car (maybe loose cable)? but if it just happen suddenly, it might be your altenator that wasn't charging your battery. I think once there's enough power gone through the car then your anti-theft system should work as normal again.
This could also be the anti theft security system (passlock) shutting down the starter. This is a common GM problem that effected Escalades from 1999 to 2007. When the anti theft starts to fail, it gets confused and locks YOU out instead of just theives. The fact that you can start it at the starter helps prove this "theory". Another indicator would be if you saw a light on the dash that says SECURITY or a picture of a little car with a padlock thru it. This site explains the whole security thing and offers DO IT YOURSELF ways to fix it.
I just had this same problem with a '96 . do you have a vats key in your '94? you need to bypass the VATS system. read some of the blogs on this site and it will tell you how to do it. I fixed mine with a $2 resistor from radio shack.
