NON INTERFERENCE ENGINE ON THIS MODEL JUST REPLACE THE BELT AND YOU WILL BE FINE . HAVE WORKED ON DOZENS OF SPORTAGES WITH BROKEN BELTS AND NEVER SEEN ANY BENT VALVES
Check solutions for Kia Sportage under heading. Need timing marksand ignition wiring by Brattlehead. The markings I gave him will also work for your 2001 Sportage
crankshaft sprocket up on timing mark, the exaust timing on the shield behind the timing gear. it will be E on the exaust cam gear and the I in the intake cam gear. then install belt.
all the diagrams are on this page.http://images.google.ca/images?hl=en&q=diagram+of+kia+sportage+timing+belts+marks&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=NI01So-nJZGuswOKqon-Dg&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title
The timing marks are just above the cams at the "twelve o'clock position"
If necessary, align the timing marks.
NOTE
When aligning the cam pulleys with the seal plate marks, align the left cam pulley “I” mark and the right cam pulley on the “E” mark.
WARNING
When aligning the timing marks, do not turn the timing gear counterclockwise. Damage to the engine will occur.
