Car stalled and won't start. I had been having trouble with the battery. Something was draining the battery when the car was off. I had been taking the positive battery terminal off so the battery didn't drain. Today, the car just suddenly stalled while I was driving. It cranks, but it will not start. I swapped the fuel pump fuse and the horn fuse because they are the same. The horn still works so it isn't the fuse. Any ideas? Is there a short somewhere that is causing this?

Look for fuel pump relay under hood in black box, is it ticking when key on? if ticking good relay. you can narrow search by finding out if it;s fuel issue or spark issue

  • bigaug Aug 16, 2010

Turns out the fuel pump fuse was blown. I just quickly looked and missed it. I replaced it, and the car fired right up. The fuse blew again after about a mile.

We jacked it up and found a place where some bare wire was rubbing up against some metal. We taped it up. I drove it around for a while and the fuse didn't blow, so I'm hoping that was causing both the fuse to blow and the battery to drain.

    Fingers crossed.

Remove battery leave off for a few hours. good time to give a charge on mains charger, put the battery back on. now put key in ignition and turn to number 2 and leave it on number 2 for 10min or more the light should stay solid on the theft control. turn off ignition then turn back on slowly. the light should not come back on. if it does come back on. take the radio out and check the wires to the radio you can do this while the battery is off... there is a lot of wiring problems on this model so i have found.

Something is draining my battery on my 1998 Cadillac DeVille

I suspect parasitic draw. All vehicles draw some power from the batteries when the car is shut off. Certain accessories such as clocks, radios remote door openers and alarms always need power. The normal power used is called parasitic draw.

It is always a very low draw so it doesn't run the battery down. If you install accessories like shortwave radios or plug things like inverters and portable refrigerators into the accessory socket and operate them too long without the engine running you can drain your batteries to the point where the engine won't start. If there is an electrical short in the vehicle or a malfunctioning accessory it could be drawing much more than its normal load causing a drain on the batteries. If you leave your door open and the inside lights stay on all night you could drain the battery down till the car won't start.

Here's also a good resource for your car specifically on narrowing down the cause of the drain.

Have you checked to see if the alternator is charging, and if there is something that is draining the battery overnight ?

Car stalls when i press the gas when starting rough idle

Make sure it's charging ok.
Jump starting can cause trouble.
If you don't have a way to check the voltage ,put jumper cables
on it and see if it runs better.

I put a new battery in my hyundai sonata and now the lights inside the car wont even come on. it won't do anything. If you jump it it will start but thats it it won't start back up after you turn...

Did this occur straight after changing out the battery, or after sitting with the new battery installed?

Have you checked the new batteries voltage and voltage under load, eg. (Voltage when headlights are on) could be a flat new battery.

Or could be load on the battery after key is turned off, something draining the battery overnight like a boot or interior light, radio left on ect.

Unlikely a short, or you would be in a world of burnt wires from the battery cables.
