Overheating means not enough cooling due to some blockage from the cooling path.
It is not necessary to have a leak. When the coolant is stagnant, coolant is not able to flow through the water jacket, radiator by the help of the water pump then heat can't be dissipated through the radiator fins therefore engine gets overheated.
You need to check these followings.
1- Thermostat: if it is not open then you get overheat.
2- Radiator: if it gets clogs up coolant can not flow thruogh.
3- Water pump: it the bearing is broken, it can not circulate coolant to the radiator.
Hope this can help.

My 2009 xterra is overheating every now & then and it coincides with the ac not working. Smelling antifreeze when I get out of the car, but I can only see splashback around the passenger tire area.

The a/c issue along with this over-heating could just be coincidence with the a/c as the a/c and cooling system of the vehicle are "two separate systems". the over-heating problem is more than likely a hose leaking and under heated pressure, it is "spraying" on the passenger side. I'm sure you are having to replenish the coolant "water" very often from the descriptions. If you do in fact have a leaking hose and haven't had any hoses replaced periodically I would then replace all coolant hoses and use half coolant and half water. I wouldn't use the half and half pre-mix as that jilts you out of coolant,A good number of cooling systems use 1 1/2 gallons so use 75% of the gallon of coolant and top off with water. I hope this helps you in your problem. Jesus loves you, John 3:16-17 (KJV)

2003 Mountaineer overheating and no heat so I replaced the thermostat still no heat and overheating drove to the store and temperature got hot so i pulled over to put water in it and unscrewed the cap...

Sounds like you might have an air locked system. Look around the top of the intake for a bleed port that will allow the air out of the engine. Most newer vehicle designs have the radiator placed lower than the engine and makes it hard for the air to move out of the engine. That is why there is no heat, the heater core is still empty.

Overheating 97 Lincon Town car

Connie, Were the radiator, water pump and thermostat replaced to try and fix the over heat issue or as maintenance. Engine overheating can be caused by a lot of things, Leak in cooling system, air in system, bad rad. cap, slipping belt, faulty thermostat or installed upside down, faulty water pump, plugged radiator (inside/outside), collapsing rad hose, faulty cooling fan, leaking head gasket, sludge plugging engine water passages, poorly tuned engine, etc..
Take into a good shop for diagnoses and estimate for repair. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

Cant stop a 201venture van from over heating the heater works the van dont run hot but wen the heater dont heat the motor runs hot

When your not feeling heat coming from the heater it usually means that the coolant level is too low in the radiator. It sounds like you have a coolant leak somewhere which is causing your overheating problem. Fill your radiator and let the engine run for about a half hour with the radiator cap on tight. Then turn off the engine and check for any leaks under the van. If you don't see any leaks under the van then see if the carpeting is wet on the passenger side of the vehicle. If the carpet is wet and it smells like anti-freeze you have a heater core that is leaking. I hope this helps you. :)

The car is not holding water in over flow or radiator. Last night my daughter was driving the car home, (about 25 miles) and half way home the car over heated real badly killing the engine. After coolong...

sounds like you had either a bad thermostat or a head gasket leak, either way if it overheated bad enough to stall the engine..damage was deffinitly done, check the oil to see what it looks like..if its milky you will need an engine, if its silver...you will need an engine,if it looks fine try replacing the thermostat, you might get a few more miles out of it if it was the thermostat but most likely not, good luck, hope this helps

My 1998 ford econoline is overheating, I flushed the water and replaced it with antifreeze but its still overheating

Hi! most likely that you may have a bad sensor or a vacuum leak by the engine. Start the ignition and safely check under the hood, check the engine from top to bottom and see or hear some unusual sound noise, you may also check infront of the rediator, sometimes the leak start there and it gets transfer to the AC compressor. best of luck.

Glad to help.

2002 malibu runs hot.

Sounds like you have a faulty head gasket or maybe a cracked head. This can cause overheating and the check engine light to come on.The code for the o2 sensor is probably caused by coolant getting into the exhaust system and coating the sensor. The coolant fan may work but it cannot remove enough heat from the rad to make the engine cool off.Try some engine coolant stop leak to see if it will help. This maybe only a temperary fix.Let me know if you need more.MOE

Overheating... My temp light keeps coming on. I checked the oil and it is fine. Checked the radiator and it is full. Engine coolant bottle is full.... So what is making it overheat?

By the sound of it your light is telling you a lie and theres nothing wrong with the engine as if your not loosing any water and engine isent overheating then just get another sensor fitted.
But if you are loosing water or the engine is overheating ,then check the radiator with engine turned off,, put your hand on the top half of the core and then the bottom 1/2 of the rad core and if the top 1/2 is cold and the bottom is hot then you have either the thermostat is faulty or the radiator is dirty inside and maybe also out side in the fins.
Let me know how you get on . RON
