Your car is probably fitted with an immobiliser , you need to have the original key in the car when you start it or replace the immobiliser module and key with a programmed chip to match that immobiliser , otherwise go to the dealer with VIN number and they will replace the key (not cheap usually) the trick is the immobiliser chip in the key must match the one in the car , it's a security feature .
being a 2002 it does have a body control module ,BCM and it needs a key pog or key remote system to turn it on and off ,you need to take your chassis number off to a dealer and get a new remote
Only a dealer can make and program a chipped key.To program it yourself requires a machine which probably costs at least $2,000-$3,000 and access to the codes which would not be available to the public/consumers for any reason.Greg
If, when you switch the ignition on, you get a dash light on, the symbol is a car with a key overlaid, you have somehow activated the immobilser You could try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, this may reset the immobiliser, If this does not work you will have to contact a Hyundai dealer to get the immobiliser unlock code.
dealer only to programme it,but they can be cut and programmed by a specialist in automotive keys but you will need the 4 figure code for your chassis number and a lot of dealers will not give you this information. Also you cannot remove the factory immobiliser as the ECU unit is extremely complicated and no wiring diagrams are published,Dont argue or go their as iam not happy with the way bill gates look alike nerds are putting me out of work.
these immobilisers on hyundai are a chip installation in key ? considering age of car and use of ign key it may well be the worne key ist causing intermitant problem ? ask mother did she get either another ign master key or a tag with the key code number stamped on it for obtaining a replacement key with the car ? as with each new hyundai you get 2x keys and either one of the above with all documents/handbooks etc try hyundai main office b4 you consider trying to cut out immobiliser? this would affect your insurance if it is stolen and found to not have working immobiliser
