The fuel filter is generally in the same location for all of the cars - located on the left side of the car, somewhat underneath the engine.The fuel pump is located in the top of the tank, and pumps fuel out the top as well. BMW 316 leaking oil, about 1 litre every 2 weeks

your going to have to clean it down good with some engine cleaner, then run engine, try to pin down leak. may have a bad oil preasure switch thats leaking, or oil filter, or a gasket; hope this helps good luck.

Engine cuts out

A few things to check.
  1. Is fuel pump delivering enough fuel.
  2. Is injectors clean. Perhaps dirt in fuel. replace fuel filter
  3. Air leakage at top air intake of manifold at ICV idle control valve. Two hoses inside this housing prone to perishing.
  4. Throttle position sensor faulty.
  5. Mass air flow sensor faulty.
  6. ICV faulty or dirty. comon fault on older e36.
Havent done it yet but ICV is easy to clean according to internet. instruction available at bmw e36 blog. All off above can be tested by yourself according to manual.

I have an L Reg 316 and the engine seems to cough and splutter around 3000-3200 RPM in any gear, even 5th.

try replacing your fuel filter, or unblocking the vents on your fuel tank, had this problem with mine and this fixed it
