It is not a fuel pump problem.
It a cold start valve problem. It didn't open. There are 2 things to check.
1- The cooling thermal sensor is not sending the proper signal to the ECU to turn on the cold start valve.
2- The bad solenoid inside the cold start valve causing it not operational.
Case 1 you can easily replace the thermal sensor.
Case 2 checking this requires professional skill to confirm if there is a signal at the valve during the start.
Good luck
5.0 or 5.7 Vortec engines do not use a cold start valve, these engines use a fuel injection system that has individual fuel injector popplets ( with a little steel ball at the end, by the intake
port) for fuel to go through there must be enough fuel pressure ( and volume). Check for
60-66 PSI if anything less than 50 it will not start unless you spray starting fluid into the air cleaner (be careful not to press the gas pedal while cranking, it may cause a backfire and catch the intake duct on fire), it should start and run ok, and even restart while the engine
is still hot, but if you wait a while like a few hours or so it won't start again, the most likely cause for this problem is the fuel pump, install a good brand, not a cheap one or you will
end up doing it again within a few months or a year or two.
I have had the same problem with my 97 Tahoe.... over and over actually. The last time I dropped the tank the pump had basically just fallen apart. Im having problems again. I still have a warranty on this pump and it will be replaced. The issue is I can't have another 3 month fuel pump. Can anyone recommend a good brand? Id rather pay the money and not worry about it. I have replaced... plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filter, lines, cam sensor, crank sensor, map sensor, maf sensor and battery.. not to mention the fuel pump twice. Is there anything I missed? One thing I noticed last time was at first if I threw jumper cables on it started right up. I had the battery, alternator, and starter checked this weekend and all checked out.
For brandon, have you gotten any further on your tahoe? Changed fuel pump, etc? I have a 99 and we have replaced 4 fuel pumps almost every 3mos but they were after market. Just looking for helpful imput for mine!
No sir. Within 2 days of getting fuel at the gas station by my moms my tahoe went from running better than it has since '04 to barely running. Id crank it 4 or 5 times before id get fed up and get out the starting fluid. Someone suggested dry gas. It did nothing. While I was out getting everything tested I bought stp gas treatment in the gray bottle. When I pulled in I had a multiple cylinder misfire, and both my down stream oxygen sensors failing according to the engine code scan tool. I was skeptical when I put the first bottle in. 3 days later no engine light. I filled up at the normal place with high octane added the second bottle. Starts right up.
Now, im not sure it will last but so far so good. Anyway my friends dad has a fleet of work trucks and he told me that he installed 10 in 1 vehicle before he got one that put out the 63 psi. He broke down and went to napa and ordered the OEM fuel pump. I tried recently but was told I had to order it from the dealership. 4 fuel pumps later im sure you don't remember but when you changed the original but on mine the original had a cap with a screen on the center valve. I believe the 99 has a line that connects to the center valve on the fuel pump though. The aftermarket pumps do not have the cap. When I'd fill the tank it would overflow and I'd lose a gallon or 2. I capped it and it seemed to start better right away.
Some other things that have been suggested are clogged catylitic converter. Which was my original problem when I bought the vehicle. It started fine but when I gave it some gas it would stall. Ignition coil is what I think I was told. I read somewhere when you check your spark it should reach about 3 inches and be blue if its its about an inch or yellow its a poor spark.
The thing that amazed me.. I mentioned that my second pump was in pieces when I removed it. I was sure it wasn't the problem. I heard the pump run everytime I turned the key. I couldn't think of anything else to try. Dropped the tank I popped off the or ring and tried to pull out the fuel pump. To my amazement the actual pump was lying in the bottom of the tank.
Hopefully some of my rambling helped out.
