If there is no trailer plug.
you will need a 12 volt test light to determine what wires do what.
climb under the vehicle, with a helper to work the brake and turn signals and the test light. find the wiring harness for the rear lights. it will either be in a wireloom under the vehicle or it can be found inside the panels at the rear of the van.
once you locate the wire loom your going to need to probe the wires to find signals. on the passenger side, you will need to find the wire that lights up when your turn signal is on. it shall make the test light flash. ( note that wire color and location) turn on your headlights and probe for the wire that has a steady light when you probe it. ( turn off the headlights) and the test light should should go out. (note that wire color and location) now locate the flashing wire for the opposite turn signal and note that color and location. now take a trailer connector and connect it to the wires you have labeled.
the standard wiring coming from a trailer is brown,yellow,green,white,

you need to connect the yellow wire to the left turn signal wire
and green is right hand signal wire.
the brown wire needs to be the running lights / headlights on signal wire. and the white wire is for chassis ground.

SOURCE: hook up for trailer

My best advise is to take it to a Auto Electric shop it takes about 1 hour and it will cost you a lot less to have it done right the first time. There many things that can go wrong and it will cost a lot to fix them.

SOURCE: wiring colour for connecting trailer lights

Your best bet is to go to an auto parts store or dealer and see if they have an adapter for trailer lights. Most of the newer vehicles have adapters the just plug into the existing wiring harness and you don't need to worry about splicing things. Also on some vehicles hooking up directly to the wiring harness doesn't work too well because of the circuit not being able to support the extra voltage drop. The adapter usually have that taken care of.

4 pin connector on my 09 caravan shows no power to any of the 3 light pins. This worked last time I used the trailer 6 months ago but now...........nada.

I also had the same problem with my 2008 grand caravan. It turned out to be a bad ground wire. A real difficult thing to find. You just might want to replace all of the wires or better still replace the entire harness it will save you a lot of trouble

I have a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan that has a hitch but no light connection. My trailer has a universal 4 way connector. I cannot find anywhere to tap into the wiring of the van to splice the wires.

check etrailer.com. they have a harness that connects to the taillights and even an installation video. the access and wiring are through the jack storage compartment on the drivers side.

Trailer wiring problem. Tow vehicle is a 2008 Grand Caravan with 4 wire plug. Double checked, plug function works fine. When trailer is plugged to tow vehicle with tow vehicle lights OFF the trailer...

Most likely the brown wire from the trailer connector is connected to a constant battery voltage source, and it should be connected to the vehicle running light circuit, however someone might have wired the trailer connector up that way on purpose so that the trailer does not draw power from the vehicle running lights and possibly damage the vehicle running light circuit. (Dodge/Chrysler vehicles do have delicate lighting systems) Here are some images to help assist you, and the 4 way connector is the same as the 5 way connector just without the blue wire for the trailer brakes.

Utility trailer wiring to 1998 Dodge Carivan

Trailer end; Red=Brake
Brown=Running lights
Yellow=Left
Green=Right
White=Ground
You will need a turn and brake signal box IF, you have different bulbs for brake and turn lamps. If the brake and turn bulbs are one(red)lens than no box will be required. Thanks, Dana
