How do I read the trouble codes? Do I need an external reader? I notice that several of them use a database starting with 1996. I am specifically needing to read the transmission codes. Thanks

Code reader need to know if it does certain things

No, the ZURICH ZR4s OBD2 Code Reader is primarily used for reading and clearing diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the vehicle's onboard computer system. It does not have the capability to relearn or reset specific sensors such as the crankshaft position sensor. Sensor relearning typically requires specialized tools or software that are specific to the vehicle manufacturer.

There are trouble codes listed for your wipers. Did you check for codes? My database shows B type codes. Check for manufacturer specific codes. There are code readers that will check manufacturer specific codes as well as po codes.

Can i get the codes on a 2007 chevy uplander without a code reader

Not very likely. You need to use a specific code reading tool or a laptop with specific software. A side effect of modern electronics.

What does check engine light mean on a 1996 Buick Century?

Check for applicable trouble codes? To check codes yourself, at the least, you need an obd2 code reader. Some of the national brand auto stores will check po codes for free. I don't know if they will check manufacturer specific codes?

How to access trouble code

year vehicle manufactured? if 1996 & later, OBDII scanner to be plugged into a port (typically, should be near the steering column, under the dash).
older models may have OBDI (no standard location of port) scanner specific to the make of the vehicle. search the web, on how to read manually (or without scanner) the code by counting the number of blinks of the MIL (malfunction Indicator light) (aka check engine, or service engine soon).

My 1996 honda accord check engine light came on and it started to idle like the spark plugs have went bad. can you give me an idea of what the problem might be?

Not yet. The check engine light coming on is letting you know that the self diagnostic function of the engine computer has detected a problem and set a trouble code. That code can be read by a code reader. Most major auto parts stores have these code readers and will read your code for free. The code number can tell you/us where to start looking for the problem.

Stopped running. towed home. alternator tested bad. replaced. van ran for about 10 minutes. stalled. started and did same thing several times. now will only crank. tried adding gas and gas treatment in...

Did you charge the battery after replacing the alternator? Is the check engine light on? If so, rent a code scanner and read out any trouble codes. That should point you in the general and maybe specific direction to help track down the problem. Hope this helps!

I cant figure out whats wrong with my 1996 jeep cheroke country i have replaced the battery.starter, rotor, distributor cap, coil, crankshaft sensor, and none of these were the problem please help!

Are there any trouble codes stored in the computers memory? A code reader will allow you to read trouble codes if any exist. This is the first place any tech would start a diagnosis, otherwise we will only be guessing a repair solution.
