My 1998 Land Rover Discovery starts intermittantly. Sometimes it is OK, sometimes it chugs for awhile then quits and sometimes it simply won't start. Mechanics gave up because it always started for...

this sounds like a failing fuel pump, this would cause low fuel pressure and that would account for the chugging as u call it, if the fuel pump has over or near 100,000 miles it is very likely that it is the problem, the pump is located inside the gas tank, if u replace it also check the fuel pump connector for burned contacts and replace the fuel filter or the manufacturer won't honor the warranty.

I had the same problem with my 98 discovery ..on mine the stering is on the left side ....on the right side under the glove box on the harnes wire there is a smal blue thing 1/2 x 11/2 inch box ( HJ1 splicer) power from the fuse is going in there and jumps with the wire from coil, fuel pump relay and the computer. In my car that jumper was not making contact ..after i shorted all 4 wires the car just started up.

I had that issue and found out that I had to push in in slightly and tune the cover withthe other hand to get it tight. if you try to get it tootight it would come off again. Also the tow top hoses need to be intalled b4 you try to tighten the black cover or screw or what ever that is called!

1998 land rover discovery fuel pump/relay

Under the hood next to the firewall is your multi-function box. It controls fuel and other things in your truck. You can pull your fuel supply line loose at the back of the injection rail and have someone turn the key on to see if you are getting fuel. If you are not, you will need test for power to the multi-function box and fuel pump. If you don't have a basic understanding of how to test for power to these components, my advice will not be much of an immediate help.

98 land rover discovery fuel pump replacement directions

This site has a lot of information regarding your Discovery including pricing, specs etc. I suspect you can find what you need here:
http://www.rangerovers.net/rrpartsv.htm#fuelreg

I was going to write that typical fuel pressure ranges somewhere between 15 & 25# and would have been 12# low.
Guess checking before pretending expertise is wise . . .

1998 land rover discovery. Fuel pump recently replaced, but now pump does not shut off after 5 sec when it should when engine is started. any suggestions?

The fuel pump must run constantly while the engine is running. There is a return for excess fuel back to the tank.
