My 1995 jeep wrangler is giving trouble starting in a Chicago summer. It has a manual transmission, and 150k miles. I have to turn the key intermittently and it takes a minute or so to start. Just before it kicks in the check engine light comes on. Any ideas?

Could also be a fuse or relay problem. You'll need to find out if the coil has voltage and if the pick-up stator in the distributor is sending a signal to the computer. Might want to check the computer for trouble codes too.
Here are a few things that need to be check out to solve your issue. Check to make sure that your clutch is completely disengaging. You could have loose or damaged shift links. Transmission oil is low or you have none.( Manual transmission use DOT3 brake fluid for lube). Check to make sure there isn't any water or debris in the transmission fluid.Check the striking rod for damage. Gear is sticking or jammed.
If the transmission oil is full and the clutch master cylinder is full, feels normal and does not slip going up steep grades, likely the gears in the transmission are worn (usually synchros). All items above contribute to proper shift engagement.
