If you have access to a diagnostic scan tool, hook it up and see if the engine coolant temp on the scanner matches the dash gauge reading. If they match, you have an engine overheat problem that yo u MUST address. If the scanner reads normal and the dash reads high, you PROBABLY have an instrumentation problem that you will need to troubleshoot.

You don't say when the car is getting hot, so it is difficult to surmise what the problem is. Often times running hot without overheating is related to an airflow problem across the radiator (fans inop, debris in the fins or between condenser / rad, missing air dam, etc).

Overheating

it could very well be a bad gauge. when it shows the engine to be overheated or at the least very hot, check the actual temp at the water outlet where the upper radiator hose attaches to the engine. use a non contact thermometer to check the temp so as not to get burned in the process. if the thermometer reads way different than the gauge, the gauge is bad.

My 1999 Chevy Malibu runs hot? It started when it overheated. We changed the thermostat, then water pump, then temp sensor gauge and the temp gauge goes high but only when the heater stops blowing hot...

Air pockets will make the guage do that, and also cause your heat to come and go. Also, a poor radiator, as in rotting, or plugged up, will cause high temperature issues.

You could buy a Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer With Laser Targeting at harbor freight ! Radiator very hot ????? What is the right temp .

Could be a bad temp gauge . Is the coolant surging inside the cooling system ? Does it have a radiator cap ? Have you replaced it ?

Saturn is overheating, tried several things.. nothing is working.

how about the coolant temp sensor, they had alot of problems with that sensor and also the plug for it,some have two of these sensors side by side, one for the gauge and the other for the fan, i would replace these first and go from ther good luck,

1998 2.4 stratus no heat, temp gauge showing overheating, no knocking noises yet, car seems to 'run' ok. Changed thermostat still showing same symptoms.

Is the coolant at the correct level? Any loss of coolant so you must add it (if so, how much and how often). Do you have a air bleed bolt on the engine (usually near the thermostat). This could just be air in the system, which would cause both problems you describe (running hot, no heat). How long does it take to drive it for it reach overheating zone on temp gauge?
