1984 ? 2001? i6? v6?
the only word i found , clear was pops
this is back fire, but to intake side or exhaust.?
intake side is bad spark timing.
exh side is gross over fueling and cracks in the exhaust pipe,
causing what is called, muffler explosions... loud report
the intake pops are back fires and is a not so loud , cough. sound.
or hickup
induction back fire is 90% bad ignition, and 10% causes by huge lean conditions.
Engine posts:
does it run bad, cold , hot engine or both?
does the engine run bad, even raced, in neutral , or cold.?
does the engine misfire at any time. say when?
does the engine bog, (lost power up hills or any time)? explain when.?
DTC P0171 - System Too Lean (Bank 1) Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1.
Note: This DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) is very similar to P0174, and in fact your vehicle may show both codes at the same time.
I would suggest that you take a look at the front oxygen sensor. Typically speaking the oxygen sensor causes this code to appear. Here is the possible cause list from the manual for your car.
Possible Causes: Air leaks in intake manifold, exhaust pipes or exhaust manifold Base engine mechanical problem causing a lean A/F condition Fuel control Sensor is out of calibration (e.g., ECT, IAT or MAP) Fuel delivery component fault (clogged filter, low fuel pressure) O2 element is contaminated, deteriorated or it has failed Vacuum hose is disconnected, broken, leaking or loose
Hope this helps (remember to rating this answer ans leave us a testimonial comment). Thank you for using FixYa.
A lean condition is the O2 Sensors (oxygen) reporting
a lean fuel mix:eg not much gas, mostly air
That would usually be caused by a vacuum leak
not a bad O2 sensor
You may have a fuel pump failing, thus taking out
fuel, you get a no start and lean O2 readings
You need to be a car doctor, not a mechanic
for this.
You could also have EGR Valve issues, letting
in too much exhaust gases
A worn TPS Sensor and loosing throttle position
Worn out O2 Sensors--over 100,000 miles on them
you have a bad intake gasket are a platuim gasket under the throttle body give these websites a try www.alldatadiy.com and www.autozone.com if all fails stop by your local library and get your hands on a Haynes auto repair manual for your car wish you the best of luck Michigan Man.
Running extremely lean. Did you replace the 02 sensors? They detect lean and rich conditions and if the previous problem was too rich, the 02 sensors may have set ecu to run lean because of their problem. Now converters are free flowing and the settings should have again adjusted itself if the 02 sensors haven't flaked out. Overheating is and a fire hazard.destrucive to a converter and as hot as you say they are getting is not good. Do this, in the intake ducting is a sensor call a maf sensor. It's in a metal section. See how dirty it is. Then buy a spray can of CRCelectrical cleaner and spray wash the sensor thoroughly. Do not touch, rub, or brush the sensors, Just rinse dirt away with spray. The sensor is delicate, sensitive and very expensive to replace. DO NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR! The spray will dry quickly. Good Luck and make sure you have a clean air filter. Let me know if you will please.Ned
