Usually one is small enough to fit on the small terminal and the rest fit on with the battery cable. The small purple wire from the key switch goes on the terminal marked S. You could do a continuity test and check it with the battery disconnected by checking it back to the neutral safety switch.
hi from uk check the main lead from battery+positive to the starters solenoid is secure ? also there is a thin wire that also connects to solenoid on a terminal of its own this is the solenoid energizing wire that works starter when key start position is selected if all above is ok? then use a jump lead and connect one end to battery negative post then the other end of lead to a suitable earth point on engine ? then try starting? if it works/starts ? you have a bad earth connection to engine from battery negative lead check the earth lead connection at point on engine is clean/secure ? it usually is secured by bolt at point where engine and transmission connect ? hope this helps?
I would check the ignition switch. You can unplug the small wire at the starter, with a test light check and see if power is at the plug when you turn the key to the start postion. If there is power there, you may have a bad starter solenoid. I've had to replace a few on my VW, (86 Scirocco, 91 Jetta GLI)
Hi,
Check/clean your battery terminal connections. If your battery is good, and assuming the starter and ignition switch is good, this would be a suspected culprit.
Hope this helps... Good luck!
COULD BE THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE RUBBING SOME WHERE SHORTING TO GROUND.CHECK POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE GOING TO STARTER.IF ITS THE PROBLEM.BUY SOME FLEXIBLE ELECTRICAL CONDUIT TO PROTECT THE CABLE FROM RUBBING.
I WOULD SAY GET A REPAIR MANUAL TO LOOK AT THE STARTER WIRING DIAGRAM TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE TWO RED WIRES BATTERY POSITIVE CABLE + FUSE LINK WIRE GOES TO SOLENOID POSITIVE BATTERY TERMINAL POST .THAT THE LARGE STUD WITH A BOLT.THE SMALL PURPLE WIRE GOES TO S OR SWITCH TERMINAL ON THE STARTER SOLENOID.
suspect wiring fault ,remove battery and tray trace wiring from gearbox sender just behind mounting to were it goes into main wiring harness strip back tape usually 1/2 wires will have broken.this depends on which model of vw you have. vwsparky.
