1988 Cadillac Sedan Deville parking brake will hold in neutral; but not in park. Worked in both positions when I purchased the car two weeks ago. Thanks, David

On my Cadillac ('98), if the vacuum release does not work there is a lever directly above the peddle that will manually release the parking brake. Follow the lever up and it should be in front near the pivot pin.
It should move freely with the transmission in neutral and parking brake released. The parking brake may be stuck engaged - it should release if you put the transmission in drive first (manually check that the parking brake pedal has released).
The Neutral Safety switch monitors the position of your gear selector lever and either interrupts or allows the starting circuit in your car or truck to do its job. On newer vehicles it may also monitor the position of the brake pedal to make sure that the vehicle is in park or neutral AND that your foot is on the brake.
If your vehicle is equipped with a neutral safety switch, it should NOT start UNLESS the transmission is in Neutral or Park. On the other hand your vehicle SHOULD start when it is in Neutral or Park. If your car will start in Neutral but not in Park, you have a bad switch. Also, if your car or truck will only start by turning the key to the start position and wiggling the gear selector lever, your neutral safty switch is in need of replacement.
The nuetral safety switch is usually found near the gear shifter. If your car has the gear shift on the column, then the neutral safety switch is usully mounted on the steering column near the brake pedal. On floor mount or console mount vehicles you will find the nuetral safety switch mounted near or on the shifter mechanism.
Hello, Look up under the dash next to the inside of the car, between the foot pedal for the park brake assembly, on the park brake assembly there should be a short lever, it may even be yellow on the end. pull it back toward you, that should release the park brake. The System is suppose to release automatically when you put the car in gear. It works off vacuum, the switch is mounted on top of the steering column and the actuator is mounted on the park brake assembly
there is a manual release on the park brake assembly I think yellow tip lever. The unit releaases automatic by vaccum, if there is vaccum to the release vaccum solenoid but it doesn't release you need a new solenoid
the park brake must be fully released if not the light will come on w/key on eng off reach down and pull back on the park brake pedal if light don't go out then it may be the brake fluid level switch located on the bottom of the brake fluid reservior. the switches were a high failure rate
You have a car that was built withh all the bells and whistles you know. The emergency parking brake is not so sophisticated at all. Cadillac installed a vacuum pod to the release actuating lever which conjoins to the shift bowl. When you aplly your foot on the brake to shift the emergency brakes will release automaticly. If it will not release, the vacuum pod is at fault & will need a replacement. They are inexpensive at any Cadillac dealerships parts department.
