How to put supertine belt on 2004 grand prix

Under the hood there will be a routing diagram for the serpentine belt. Use that as a guide for replacement routing. There is an automatic belt tensioner in the loop. Use an appropriate tool to release the tension on the old belt and remove it from the vehicle. Route the new belt as per the diagram and allow the automatic tensioner to re-tension the belt.

(1999 pontiac grand prix 3100 v6) how do I remove and replace my serpentine belt successfully?

Instructions Things You'll Need
  • 3/8-inch drive breaker bar
  • Metric socket kit
  • New serpentine belt
    • 1

Park the Pontiac in a safe work area and open the hood.

    • 2

Inspect the top of the black plastic cover that surrounds the fan for the serpentine belt routing diagram. This diagram has the instructions for installing the new serpentine belt around the accessory pulleys.

    • 3

Inspect the front of the engine and locate the automatic belt tensioner. The tensioner on the 1999 Pontiac model vehicles is located between the alternator and the crankshaft pulley. The tensioner has a pulley on one end with a bolt head in the center of the pulley. Use the bolt head to rotate the tensioner.

    • 4

Turn the tensioner counterclockwise with the breaker bar and a metric socket. Pull the belt out from under the tensioner pulley with your other hand. Then, slowly let the tensioner retract until it stops.

    • 5

Pull the belt out of the other remaining pulleys. Then, pull the belt out of the engine bay and lay it on the ground.

    • 6

Route the new belt around the crankshaft pulley. Then, route the new belt around the other remaining pullleys by using the serpentine belt routing diagram for instructions.

    • 7

Rotate the tensioner pulley counterclockwise with the breaker bar and socket. Then, slide the new belt under the tensioner pulley. Slowly let the tensioner retract until it stops. The tensioner pulls all of the slack out of the belt and brings the new belt to the proper tension. Remove the breaker bar and socket from the tensioner pulley.

    • 8

Inspect the new belt to ensure that it is seated inside of all the accessory pulleys as directed by the diagram. Then, crank the engine and allow it to run for about 15 seconds. Turn the engine off. Inspect the belt again once more to ensure that
the belt is still around each pulley. Close the hood.

How difficult is it to change the serpentine belt tension assembly on the 1995 pontiac grand am with the V6? Does the engine need to raised out of the vehicle?

the engine does not have to be raised
.you need a serpentine tool.it is a flat bar with hex cut outs for the pulley.or a shallow socket and ratchet.
the tensioner need to be slack to put on the new belt. draw a diagram of the belt routing of the old belt. the crankshaft is easier put on from the bottom.there is not alot of space and the belt has to be twisted sideways past a few pulleys.

Serpentine belt tensioner pulley adjustment

If this is an ac car you will need to get the correct belt and retreive a routing diagram from autzone or the manual. sometimes the pulleys are different for ac versus non ac and you may have to remove an idler to run the belt

Need help replacing a serpentine belt....any ideas

Locate the belt tensioner. There should be a place on it where you can insert a 3/8's drive, or 1/2" drive ratchet. Once you get the ratchet in position, you can remove the belt by either pushing down, or pulling up the ratchet handle.

Serpentine belt replacement

2.0L Engines
See Figures 11, 12 and 13
The accessory drive belt for 2.0L engines has no provision for manual belt adjustment, since these engines use an automatic belt tensioner. Drive belt slack is taken up by the automatic tensioner.
Movement of the automatic tensioner assembly during engine operation is not a sign of a malfunctioning tensioner. This movement is the tensioner self-adjusting and is required to maintain constant belt tension.
The belt tensioner has a belt length indicator. If the indicator marks are not between the MIN and MAX marks, the belt must be replaced.
