John, this sounds like a valve hanging up in the valve body. The car shifts when the govenor pressure overcomes throttle valve pressure in this valve body.
What is the condition of the fluid? Is it at all dark or grey, does it smell burnt? It should be a nice light pink. If not, have the fluild and filter for the trans changed. This may take care of the problem.
If the oil is really burnt, you are at the end of the life of the clutches and you are looking at a complete trans rebuild. If the oil is ok, a trans shop should be able to take just the valve body down, clean it and eliminate the problem without overhauling the entire transmission
good luck

I would drop the trans pan and change fluid & filter. If you find an extreme amount of debris in pan, filter may have become partially plugged, which can lower internal pressure. Only problem is that if there is enough debris to plug up filter, it indicates wear inside unit, which a fluid change will not correct (no chemical will) But, if problem becomes somewhat better after oil change, an additive such as Lucas conditioner may prolong useful life somewhat.Otherwise, have unit rebuilt.
good luck

Doesn't cost much, if anything for a proper diagnosis at a transmission repair place or dealer, and then a quote must be presented, for you to decide yes or no. may well be worth it in the long run. Have you tried retrieving trouble codes by cycling key, on, off, on, off, on, and leaving on,(not start) counting flashes of check engine light? For example: 2 flashes, pause, 2 more flashes is code 22. 3 flashes, pause, 3 more is code 33 ...etc.

THERE MUST BE SOME FAULT CODES STORED IN TCM..WHEN A FAULT OCCURS,THE TCM SHUTS THE POWER FEED OFF TO THE SHIFT SOLENOIDS IN THE SOLENOID PACK SO ALL YOU HAVE IS SECOND GEAR(LIMP MODE)..IS YOUR SPEEDOMETER WORKING?IF NOT IT MAY BE THE OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR IS BAD..YOU SHOULD GET TCM SCANNED FOR FAULT CODES..I HOPE THIS HELPS

Hi:
This same thing happened to my daughter,s car, and it ended up being fixed with a transmission speed sensor. This sensor not only runs the speedometer, it helps tell the transmission when to shift too.
