SOURCE: Jetta GLX 1998 (old body), when it rains heavy, car run rough

Sounds like you need new wires and or cap and rotor, had the same problem on my jetta 1.8L when I would drive it in heavy rain it would bog down and misfire. The water blows threw the rad right onto your distributor and wires causing the short (old and cracked or just defective). Try it out I'm sure that will fix it.

SOURCE: car is not starting when damp

Lincoln town cars are famous for this because the rear opening to the hood has been placed right over your distributor so; the rainwater just soaks your distributor. to fix this permanently get a piece of oil roofing paper cut it about 6' wide and glue it over the gap from under the hood this will keep your distributor dry

Stalls when rains

Depending on the year, it's likely bad wires or a bad distributor cap. You can recreate the problem when it's dry by filling a squirt bottle with salt water and spraying the wires with it while the truck is running. You'll either get a nice light show or it will start to stumble/stall.

2002 hyundai wont start after rain

Look at the attached AMAZON item (WD40... below)...
(old time remedy for wet weather issues... DIRTY & CRACKED
distributor caps... Spray on WD40 and wipe dry with VERY clean cloth or tissues only)).

It sounds like you might have a couple of troubles...

When having electrical issues... always start with your BATTERY CABLES & TERMINALS first... (clean & tight) and CERTAINLY
use these red/green FELT battery washers under each CLEANED terminal...

"Hesitating STARTER" could be corroded battery terminals..
but could ALSO be a STARTER/SOLENOID trouble.

Do check that ALL bolts & fittings are tight and clean
(while you have the BATTERY DISCONNECTED....
(caution: very dangerous if you cross BAT & GROUND)).

Every time it rains hard my car will turn over but wont start

You need a can of wire dryer and WD40.

I have the same problem on the same car.
I replaced the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and when it's damp and wet my car would not start. sometimes if i try for 20 minutes it may kick in but doing so after a few rainy days i blew my starter. Now I just spray my wires and cap with the wire dryer and WD40 before it rains. And if it doesn't start and it's wet outside, use the wire dryer. I heard some people used some shroud to cover their cap, but i don't know what they used as it's close to the engine and I didn't want something melting.

My 97 vw jetta won't start when it rains

I would check your spark plug wires, when it's been dry out, start the car and with a spray bottle, spray the plug wires and see if there is any difference, also the coil wire. The smell is most likely from the catalytic converter. Any check engine light?

Damp is getting into your electrics. Spray all wires and disributor with WD40 after wet days or nights before trying to start it. That should cure it

Rough running after rain

It sounds as thou you have moisture in your distributor.Pull the distributor cap off and let the car sit and dry out for a couple of days and see if that fixes the problem.

!997 Jetta doesnt start when it is early inthe morning w/ dew on the Ground or rainy day.

I had the same problem with miosture and my 96 Jetta GLS dying, and I finally figured out it was the ignition coil. Spray the coil with water lightly while it is running, and it'll probably kill the car. They you'll know!

1997 vw jetta stalling when raining

The problem in the Jetta could very well be with the ignition coil. I had the same problem for a long time and tried the usual replacing plugs, wires, etc, but nothing seemed to work.

It ended up being the ignition coil which over time, managed to sustain very small cracks. Even a small amount of moisture would cause all sorts of problems.

I replaced the ignition coil and had no problems after that.
