Whatever you do, NEVER allow this engine to overheat and always use the correct antifreeze (DEX COOL) or you will damage your heads severly. The heads were made from aluminum so there is a very serious warping issue on the 1998 Cadillac Northstar engines. There should have been a recall but wasnt, ended up costing me 3 thousand USD to fix the engine problems I had but she now runs fine. I only had the car 4 months before this happened so someone prior to me owning evidentaly let it overheat on too many occassions and I had no choice but to fix cause I was still paying on the car!! Good luck

Engine overheat- check to see temperature is below 230 deg. F on DIC.

change engine oil- reset engine oil life by hitting information until you get to % engine oil life (or something like that) and hitting reset for 5 seconds or so.

Check Coolant level- when car is cool, open the coolant reservoir fill cap and add coolant as necessary.

I had a bad water pump on my 1997 Cadillac Deville Limousine which set me back about $300 and was very difficult because the water pump was leaking through the o-ring, but was stuck on to the flange very bad.

Wish you luck.

2000 Dodge Dakota Quad cab error H2OS is contaminated or deteroated?

Check engine coolant level. Make sure no coolant in engine oil (crankcase).

Add coolant if low. Check immediately and a few minutes later... if coolant low again identify leak or check oil level. Dont run engine if coolant in oil.

I have a 96 cadillacsls that is over heating- no leaks but it is pouring out the over flow tube?

Did you over heat warning message come on " Urgent shut off engine" or check coolant message? My coolant message came on but once car warmed up, it was late summer. No leakage but coolant level was low; added some coolant. Then it happened again but once car warmed up the check message disappeared. Then a few days later I got the Urgent Shut off Engine message! Thankfully I was able to pull off road and shut down immediately. Had it towed to Caddy shop. My water pump had gone out. New Pump and replaced all hoses. Then a year later check coolant light came on again, once car warmed up, light went off. This time tho a small leak in the radiator. My husbank put in a new radiator. Car has 117K miles and a few weeks ago outside temp 35, running late for work and didn't allow car to warm up but just a minute or two and when I puled away the check coolant light came on; but once the car warmed up (temp gauge needle in center) the light went out. Being the car is 17 years old I try to treat her like a baby and not push her so I do let the engine warm up before driving away. Do you have to add oil between oil changes? This is normal for the Northstar engine; your regular garages or full service stations don't know this; also make sure if you aren't using an authorized Cadillac garage that they put the right amount of oil; they want to put less than what is required. Not sure if this is really a solution more comments than anything... :)

Engine coolant hot sensor and idle engine sensor appear 5 minutes after driving. When I park car and shut it off I hear bubbling noises

Hello: The first thing is check the coolant level. Do this on a cold engine, if engine is a 4.9 check both the radiator and the overflow tank. Make sure they are full of coolant. If it is a Northstar engine then make sure the surge tank is full, this may require checking the tank again after bring the engine to operating temperature then let it cool off. DO NOT OPEN COOLING SYSTEM ON HOT ENGINE it could cause serious burns to you.

Will car run hot if oil change is needed

no, and oil change will not stop the car from getting hot,,, check to see if your cooling fans are coming on, if not, check fuses and relays, check coolant level

My car is overheating, with whit smoke coming from the tailpipe, and a message saying idle engine check coolant level, even after putting cooland and water in the car

hello, one of the major problem of this car is over-heating.kindly check for the engine cooler flow at the purge line, this is a common problem on the northstar.there is a small diameter hose coming from near the coolant tank, this is the purge line.with the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose, this simply means it is blocked and this will cause overheating.if the hose is clear, then kindly check for blockage at the nipple of the tank.i will also advice you to take your car to a service center because it's actually due for servicing, and this has to be attended to as soon as possible to prevent a crashing engine.
Thanks,you are highly appreciated.

Problem with overheating on 1996 Cadillac Deville with Northstar engine. The information screen read "engine overheating", "idle engine" and "change oil" all within one minute. Are these issues related...

The oil life resets to zero after the engine overheats. Check for external leaks first, make sure the water pump belt is still there and turning. The most likely cause if the car has over 70,000 miles is head gaskets.
