Having problems with the clutch in my 1998 Ford Ranger. There is no freeplay, and it is very difficult to shift. Do I need to adjust the clutch? If so, how do I adjust it?

The clutch is not adjustable,it is a fluid clutch. It has to be a leak,or the slave cylinder, and,or, the master cylinder are bad,It does not have to be leaking to be bad,but it is one of the two.Rate please, thank you.

The clutch is 'self bleeding' by slowly depressing and releasing the clutch pedal 15 or 16 times according to the service manual I read. It could be difficult to shift because the clutch is not fully disengaging.

Check fluid level if possible.

The slave cylinder could be leaking and the following can explain what it might take to fix it:
Slave Cylinder Removal & Installation To Remove:
Typical clutch assembly with internal slave cylinder Having problems with the clutch in my 1998 Ford - 7924fg29.gif

  1. Remove the transmission. NOTE: Examine the clutch housing for traces of brake fluid. If fluid is present, install a new clutch slave cylinder.
  2. Remove the clutch slave cylinder.
  3. Examine the clutch slave cylinder looking for a damaged or worn boot, a damaged or worn bearing, or leaking fluid.
  4. Examine the clutch release bearing for damage or wear by turning the outer race while applying pressure. If it feels rough as you turn the bearing, install a new clutch slave cylinder.
To Install:
  1. Install the clutch slave cylinder and bolts onto the transmission. Torque to 15 ft-lb (20 Nm).
  2. Install the transmission.
  3. Depress and release the clutch pedal 5 full strokes.

Why might my 5 speed manual transmission in my 1999 Ford Ranger XLT hard to shift into each gear?

is your clutch pedal soft? If so you could have a slave cylinder leaking or maybe just in the the system bleed back up. Might be that the clutch drive disc is burned up making it hard to shift

1998 Ford Ranger Truck Clutch problems

I remember a problem with the Ranger Series involving the hydraulic assisted clutch. There was a special refill procedure for a few Year Models. If the hydraulics leaked during storage an air bubble could occur and they are next to impossible to get fresh fluid back to fill the void. And it would not fix the leak.

I remember a video showing all the components fastened to a display board to train Mechanics on the extra effort needed to bleed this system.

I would say to search the Web under a topic like "Ford Ranger hydraulic clutch bleeding" to find the article. Even if you replace the current clutch cylinder, it may be no less difficult to refill. Your mechanic may need the info you find.

How do i adjust the clutch

You should have a hydraulic clutch which is not adjustable unless it has air in the system.

2000 ford explorer shift stick is not wanting to shift into or out of first gear. Clutch is all the way depressed, no grinding noises, sometimes so hard to move I have to turn off the engine to shift into...

You didn't state the miles but I think either your clutch is gone or out of adjustment, if it is a manual non - hydraulic system. If you have a hydraulic clutch system, you may have a bad master or slave cylinder. Adjusting a manual clutch usually is not too bad but changing a clutch is a major job. Taking it to a mechanic should be your next step if you have less than medium mechanical skill. You can call your local auto parts store to see if you have a hydraulic system or not - if not, follow the clutch cable through the firewall and into the engine compartment, to the transmission. The cable will go through a metal bracket with 1 or 2 nuts on the cable housing - usually 2, with 1 nut on each side of the fork the housing passes through. Loosen the side away from the tranny enough to turn the other nut at least 10 turns, moving the housing end away from the tranny as you adjust. Re - tighten nuts and try the clutch. Repeat procedure until your clutch engages when you have released about 1/4 the distance traveled by the pedal. If you cannot restore clutch operation, then your clutch needs replacing and your flywheel needs to be resurfaced - a difficult job, to say the least.
Good luck!!

Clutch does not work

A clutch needs freeplay.
But it only needs a half inch or so.
So if there is that much freeplay, leave it.
You want as much clutch travel under pressure as you can get.
If there is not at least a half inch freeplay, then you either lengthen the cable by shortening the sheath adjustment, or shorten the clutch master cylinder rod.

How do I adjust the clutch? Clutch engages when

A high clutch pedal is good.
There should only be about a half inch of pedal freeplay, before you start to feel resistance.
So the clutch should not engage until it is almost fully released, near the top.
The makes shifting the easiest.

If the shifting is difficult when cold, then put the transmission in neutral and let the clutch out when you warm up the engine.
That will warm up the transmission oil.

Of course you could also check the transmission oil level and change it.
But your question makes me believe you may need more experience on a stick shift. Make sure you do the H pattern carefully, and do not get lazy and turn it into an X pattern.

Ford Ranger 98'Splash don't shift 3rd and

you will need to connect it ti a scanner to confirm but it sounds like your solenoid (there is a solenoid that controls those gears inside your tranny) the part is actually cheap and should take no time to replace. the cost comes in a way of replacing the tranny fluid that will be lost.

1998 ford ranger is a pain to get into first

If this has the original clutch componets and a lot of hard wear due to city driving or 150000 miles and higway driving you are in need of replacing the clutch assembly including the throwout bearing which has the slave cylinder incorporated with that part. To test this start by doing this test with the engine off. Pump the clutch pedal about 25 times. Start the engine and shift into 1st. If it shifts easily the slave cylinder is bad
