There are two hose connections for the heater core, if that's what you mean.

There should be two hoses coming out of the firewall, one for input and one for output.

The water pump pumps coolant from the engine to the radiator and if the thermostat is closed

the coolant will not circulate, until the thermostat opens inside of the thermostatic housing.

There must be a complete circuit between the water pump pumping fluid from the engine to the radiator and back and also a side route for the heater core. Which, works without the thermostat opening.

    Does this help at all?

Step by step instruction to replace heater core 1998 oldsmobile 88

1. First you have to disconnect the Oldsmobile vehicle battery, then you have to drain the engine coolant into a clean container, most models don't have a drain plug on the bottom of the radiator, so you must take off the lower radiator hose to drain the system.

2. Second you have to remove the drain tube from the heater's housing and disconnect the heater hoses from the core, to reach out the heat core you have to take off the sound insulators on both sides of the car, then the steering column's opening filler and finally the air outlet duct and the floor air outlet.

3. Third you have to disconnect the heater core cover and then remove the core-to-housing mounting clamps and remove the heater core.

4. Fourth you have to Install the new heater core and connect the mountain clamps. I did a quick online search and if you need new Heater Core this site looks like it has cheap prices, free shipping and great reviews http://www.buyautoparts.com/heater_core.htm

5. Fifth Replace all the core cover, rear floor air outlet, air outlet duct, steering column opening filler, sound insulators and center console (if equipped). Reattach the heater hoses to the core and the drain tube to the housing and fill the cooling system, using new coolant if the old liquid doesn't appear clean. Be sure the lower radiator hose is securely back in place before filling the radiator. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

No heat, and I want to replace the heating core, need directions

Heater Core REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION
Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old. Replace heater core

A heater core transfers heat from a 1994 Ford Ranger's engine to the passenger compartment by running hot radiator coolant through a serpentine of tubing. Air blows past the hot fins of the heater core and into the truck cab.

The hoses running to and from the heater core must be removed from the engine compartment, but the core itself is accessed from inside the passenger compartment, on the driver's side next to the center console.

    1. Turn off the engine, open the hood and remove the battery cable from the negative terminal. Make sure the engine is cool.

    2. Attach a 3/8-inch interior diameter hose to the drain outlet on the bottom rear corner of the radiator on the driver's side, and place the bottom end in a resealable plastic container. Turn the drain valve (located above the drain outlet) counterclockwise with a pair of pliers. Drain the engine coolant into the resealable container, then close the valve by turning it clockwise. Remove the hose from the outlet.

    3. Loosen the hose clamps on the radiator hoses where they attach to the heater core on the firewall. Remove the hoses.

    4. Unscrew the screws holding the underdash cover in place on the driver's side of the passenger compartment. Remove the underdash cover.

    5. Unscrew the four screws on the cylindrical heater core access cover and remove it. Remove the heater core by pulling it down and toward the rear of the vehicle. Replace the unit with a new heater core.

    6. Reinstall the heater core access cover and screw in the retaining screws. Replace the underdash cover and screw it into place.

    7. Replace the radiator hoses on the heater core in the engine compartment. Tighten the hose clamps. Add coolant until the level is between the minimum and maximum marks on the reservoir.

    8. Replace the battery cable and start the engine. Check the system for leaks.

My truck wont blow out any hot air, just cold. i put a new radiator and thermostat in it. it is full of anti freeze

Try removing the Heater hoses from heater tubes(be careful not to break heater tubes off) then back flush heater core with garden hose(Don't use a lot of pressure). Jell from antifreeze builds up in the heater core and blocks the coolant flow. If it is easier, remove the heater hoses from the engine, that is safer. Back flush the heater from the hoses. To Back Flush (The hose coming from the water pump is the inlet)(Hose going to Manifold is outlet) Back flush outlet hose! To much water pressure may cause damage to heater core!!!! Do Not ues AIR!!!!

Instuctions for removing heater core

  • Disconnect the negative cable from the Oldsmobile Alero's battery. While the car is securely raised on jack stands, drain the engine coolant into a clean container. Most models don't have a drain plug on the bottom of the radiator, so you must take off the lower radiator hose to drain the system.
  • Step 2 Remove the drain tube from the heater's housing and disconnect the heater hoses from the core. Take off the center console, if one is equipped. Then, take off the sound insulators on both sides of the car, the steering column's opening filler, the air outlet duct and the floor air outlet to reach the heater core.
  • Step 3 Disconnect the heater core cover. Remove the core-to-housing mounting clamps and remove the heater core.
  • Step 4 Install the replacement heater core. Connect the mounting clamps and replace the core cover.
  • Step 5 Replace the rear floor air outlet, air outlet duct, steering column opening filler, sound insulators and center console (if equipped). Reattach the heater hoses to the core and the drain tube to the housing.
  • Step 6 Fill the cooling system, using new coolant if the old liquid doesn't appear clean. Be sure the lower radiator hose is securely back in place before filling the radiator. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Step 7 Start up the Oldsmobile Alero's engine and let it run until it reaches normal operating temperature. Observe the climate control operation and check for any leaks in the system.

    • Label and remove the heater hoses from the heater core. The heater hoses will connect to the heater core in the engine bay, on the firewall, on the passenger side of the vehicle. Use either the Phillips or the flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps that secure the hoses to the heater core. Then pull the hoses off the heater core.
    Removing the Heater Core
    • Remove the heater core cover. Move to inside the passenger compartment. Locate the heater case. It will be bolted to the firewall, below the dash on the passenger side of the vehicle. Use an appropriate sized socket or wrench to remove the five screws that connect the heater core cover to the heater case, and remove the cover.
    • Remove the steel straps that secure the heater core to the heater case. Unscrew the four screws that connect the steel straps to the heater case using a socket or wrench and remove the straps.
    • Remove the heater core by pulling it out of the heater case.
    Installing the Heater Core
    • Place the new heater core into position inside the heater case. Be sure to carefully guide the inlet and outlet tubes through the holes in the firewall.
    • Reinstall the heater core retaining straps, by reinstalling the four screws that secure them.
    • Place the heater core cover into position over the heater case and reinstall the five screws that secure it.

    Refilling the Cooling System
    • Reconnect the heater hoses to the heater core. Slide the hoses onto the inlet and outlet fittings that extend through the firewall, and tighten the hose clamps.
    • Close the petcock valve on the lower corner of the radiator by turning it clockwise.
    • Refill the radiator with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water.
    • Reinstall the radiator cap onto the radiator.
    • Run the engine and visually inspect for leaks.
