I have a 1994 oldsmobile 88 Royale with a 3.8 v6. I have asked this question to 2 "experts" and no one seems to be willing to answer this question: There is linkage that goes from the lock cylinder down the interior of the steering column until it meets up with the ignition switch pushbutton which is mounted on the lower steering column below the dash. When you turn the key to the start position it is to move the linkage (i believe) so it engages the pushbutton so the car will start but the linkage does not move. I have tried pushing and holding the pushbutton down while cranking the key but my engine will still not turn over (which is what my problem is). I have power going to the gauges when I turn key to on position and fuel pump and injectors prime up- but will not turn over. Power is not getting to the selenoid and I know That I may have a problem with the security system but that still does not change the fact that my linkage is not moving and it should be even if the battery was disconnected -

The starter switch fails commonly. If the linkage does not move then it has probably broken loose from the ignition switch and switch will have to be replaced.

  • Disconnect battery ground cable . Remove the upper steering column shroud by removing the self-tapping screws. Remove four bolts retaining lower steering column shroud and remove lower steering column shroud.
  • Remove lock screw and disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
  • Rotate the ignition switch lock cylinder to the RUN position.
  • Remove the two screws retaining ignition switch .
  • Disengage the ignition switch from the actuator.

  • NOTE: A new replacement ignition switch assembly will be set in the RUN position as received.

Same problem ..hopefully some expert will answer my questions.....My mechanic has spent over 10 hours of troubleshooting my cruise control for a 1995 olds 88 royale ls. Everything (including voltage test...

some cruise controll systems use the center high mount stop lighy [third brake light] as an input for the cruise control if its not working the cruise wont either. all fault diagnosis would conclude that if everything checks ok then the computer is at fault. but i would dought all checks ok. a skilled mechanic should be able to diagnose the problem in 1.5 hours and that is a generous time alotment.10 hours is extreme. so mabee a second diagnosis should be performed

    94 olds 88 want start

yes it can be the security system, find the two all white wires at the bottom of the steering column and cut them and solder the correct ohm resistor in between you will need an ohm meter to measure the resistance of the chip on the ignition key then install that omh resistor to the wires.
