REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
2.0L Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
CAUTION Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant.
  1. Drain the engine cooling system.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the lower radiator hose from the water pump.
If the lower radiator hose is hard to reach on the back of the water pump, remove the hose at the radiator and after the water pump is ready to be removed, pull the water pump away from the engine block until there is enough room to remove the hose from the pump.
  1. Lower the vehicle.
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  3. Remove the timing belt covers and the timing belt as outlined in this Section.
  4. Remove the four water pump retaining bolts.
  5. Remove the water pump.
To install:
  1. Thoroughly clean all sealing surfaces.
  2. Install a new water pump gasket and the water pump onto the cylinder block.
  3. Tighten the retaining bolts to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-20 Nm).
  4. Reinstall the timing belt and the timing belt covers as outlined in this Section.
  5. Reinstall the accessory drive belt.
  6. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  7. Reinstall the lower radiator hose.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Fill the engine cooling system.
  10. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  11. Start the engine and top off the coolant as necessary. Check for leaks.


2.5L Engine

Before continuing with this procedure, be sure three new water pump retaining bolts (W701544) are available. Due to their torque-to-yield design, the bolts stretch and cannot be reused.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
CAUTION Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant.
  1. Drain the engine cooling system.
  2. Remove the water pump pulley shield.
  3. Remove the water pump drive belt.
  4. Remove the water pump inlet and outlet hoses from the water pump.
  5. Remove the three water pump to left cylinder head retaining bolts.
  6. Remove the water pump and water pump housing from the vehicle.
  7. Remove the water pump to water pump housing retaining bolts and separate the water pump from the water pump housing.
To install:
  1. Thoroughly clean all sealing surfaces.
  2. Install the water pump to the water pump housing using a new gasket and install the retaining bolts. Tighten the retaining bolts to 16-18 ft. lbs. (22-25 Nm).
  3. Position the water pump and water pump housing and install three new torque-to-yield retaining bolts into the left cylinder head.
  4. Tighten the new retaining bolts to 11-13 ft. lbs. (15-18 Nm), then rotate the retaining bolts 85-95 degrees.
  5. Reinstall the water pump inlet and outlet hoses to the water pump.
  6. Reinstall the water pump drive belt.
  7. Reinstall the water pump shield.
  8. Fill the engine cooling system.
  9. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  10. Start the engine and top off the coolant as necessary. Check for leaks.

Change the water pump

  • Tools Required
  • J 43651 Water Pump Holding Tool
  • Remove the thermostat housing.
  • Remove the water pump access plate from the front cover.
  • Remove the right hand fender liner.
    1. Important: A drain plug has been provided at the bottom of the water pump assembly for additional coolant drainage from the engine block and water pump.
    Drain the coolant from the water pump using the plug at the bottom of the pump.
    1. mportant: The water pump holding tool supports the sprocket and chain during water pump service. The tool must be used or the balance shaft must be re-timed.
    Install the J 43651 into position.
    1. Tighten the bolts on the water pump holding tool into the threads on the water pump sprocket.
    2. Install the access cover bolts that were removed earlier to secure the water pump holding tool to the front cover assembly.
    3. Remove the 3 inner water pump sprocket to water pump blots.
      1. Important: Be sure to remove both water pump bolts from the front of the engine block.
      Remove the 2 water pump bolts.
      Remove the rear 2 water pump bolts.
      1. Remove the water pump.
      2. Remove and discard the water pump O-ring seal.
      Installation Procedure
      1. Important: Prior to installing the water pump, read the entire procedure. This will help avoid balance shaft chain re-timing and ensure proper sealing.
      Install a NEW water pump O-ring seal.

      1. Important: A guide pin can be created to aid in water pump alignment. Use a M 6 m x 6 mm stud. Thread the pin into the water pump sprocket.
      Using the guide pin, align the pin with the water pump holding tool.
      1. Position the water pump against the engine block and hand tighten the water pump bolts.
      2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice.
      Install the inner water pump sprocket bolts. After 2 are snug, remove the guide pin and install the 3rd bolt.
      Tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
      1. Tighten the water pump sprocket bolts last. Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
      2. Remove the J 43651.
      3. Install the water pump access plate and bolts. Tighten the bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
      4. Install the right hand fender liner.
      5. Install the thermostat housing.

Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. If equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the exhaust manifold..
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Right front wheel and tire assembly.

    • Access plate on the water pump sprocket from the timing cover.
  6. Install J 43651 water pump sprocket holder or equivalent to the water pump sprocket.
  7. Use the access plate bolts to attach J43651 to the engine front cover.

    • Bolts that secure the sprocket to the water pump.
    • Bolt that secures the engine block to the water pump.
    • Bolt that secures the engine front cover to the water pump.

    • 2 Bolts that secure the water pump to the engine block.
    • Water pump.
To Install:
  1. Use a threaded stud in the hub to align the water pump sprocket.
  2. Install or connect the following:
    • Water pump.
    • 2 bolts that secure the water pump to the engine block.
    • Feed pipe that joins the thermostat housing to the water pump.
    • Front cover bolt and the bolt that secures the engine block to the water pump. Tighten the bolts to 15 ft lbs (20 Nm).
    • 2 of the bolts that secure the water pump sprocket to the water pump.
  3. Remove the threaded stud.
  4. Install the last bolt.
    • Tighten the bolts to 89 in lbs (10 Nm).
  5. Remove J 43651.
  6. Install the access plate on the water pump sprocket to the timing cover.
  7. Install the access plate bolts.
    • Tighten the bolts to 18 in lbs (10 Nm).
  8. Install the front fender liner.
  9. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  10. If equipped with an automatic transmission, install the exhaust manifold.
  11. Fill the cooling system.
  12. Connect the battery ground cable.
2.4L Engine To Remove:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  4. Remove the coolant intake pipe as follows:
    1. Remove the coolant inlet pipe bolts.
    2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
    3. Remove the engine splash shield.
    4. Remove the bolts from the transaxle-to-engine block brace and remove the brace.
    5. Remove the radiator hose from the coolant inlet pipe.
    6. Remove the coolant inlet pipe to oil pan bolt.
    7. Remove the coolant inlet pipe, thermostat and seal.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Disconnect the heater hose quick connect from the heater outlet pipe.
  7. Remove the front timing chain cover and the chain tensioner.
  8. Unfasten the water pump-to-cylinder block bolts.
  9. Remove the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.
  10. Remove the water pump and cover mounting bolts and nuts.
  11. Remove the water pump and cover as an assembly. Separate the two pieces after removal.
  12. Clean the mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install the water pump cover to the water pump assembly.
  2. Install and hand tighten the pump cover mounting bolts.
  3. Install water pump cover assembly.
  4. Install and hand tighten the cover-to-block mounting bolts.
  5. Install and hand tighten the water pump-to-timing chain housing nuts.
    • Tighten the water pump-to-timing chain housing mounting nuts to 19 ft lb (26 Nm).
    • Tighten the water pump cover-to-water pump mounting bolts to 124 in lb (14 Nm).
    • Tighten the water pump cover-to-engine block bolts starting with the bottom bolt first to 19 ft lb (26 Nm).
  6. Install the heater hose to the water pump pipe.
  7. Using new gaskets, install the exhaust manifold.
  8. Install the oil level indicator and tube.
  9. Connect the brake vacuum tube to the cam housing.
  10. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  11. Install the catalytic converter.
  12. Install the coolant inlet pipe.
    • Tighten the inlet pipe-to-oil pan bolt to 19 ft lb (26 Nm). Tighten the coolant inlet pipe bolt to 124 in lb (14 Nm).
  13. Install the timing chain and tensioner.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Connect the oxygen sensor.
  16. Fill cooling system and check the system for leaks.
3.4L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Drive belt.
    • Water pump pulley bolts and pulley.
    • Water pump bolts, pump and gasket.
    • Clean the water pump mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Water pump gasket and pump.
    • Water pump bolts.
      1. Tighten the water pump bolts to 89 in lbs (10 Nm).
    • Water pump pulley and bolt until snug.
    • Drive belt.
  2. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 18 ft. lbs (25 Nm).
  3. Fill the cooling system.
  4. Check for leaks.
  5. Connect the battery ground cable.

Water Pump Replacement (4.3L)
Removal Procedure
Drain the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .
Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
Remove the cooling fan and clutch assembly.

Tools Required
J 46406 Fan Clutch Wrench

Removal Procedure
Remove the upper fan shroud.
Remove the fan clutch from the water pump in a counterclockwise direction using the J 46406 .
Remove the fan clutch assembly.
Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement Remove the water pump pulley mounting bolts.
Remove the water pump pulley.
Remove the radiator outlet hose clamp from the water pump.
Remove radiator outlet hose from the water pump.
Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
Remove the water pump from the engine.
Remove the water pump gaskets.
Clean the water pump gasket mating surfaces.
Installation Procedure
Install the water pump gaskets.
Install the water pump to the engine.
Apply a sealer (GM P/N 12346004) to the bolt threads.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Install the water pump mounting bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the mounting bolts to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).
Install the radiator outlet hose to the water pump.
Install the water pump pulley.
Install the water pump pulley bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 4.3L.
Install the fan clutch assembly.
Fill the radiator cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .
Inspect the cooling system for leaks.

How Do i replace Water Pump on 98 Chevy Metro

  1. Remove the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the engine cooling system.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4. Remove the A/C compressor suction pipe bracket (if equipped).
  5. Loosen four water pump pulley bolts. Do not remove the bolts.
  6. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Remove the right lower splash shield.
  7. Remove the right lower splash shield.
  8. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt (if so equipped) by releasing the tensioner pulley and removing the belt from the crankshaft and compressor pulleys.
  9. Loosen the generator adjusting bolt (1), pivot the generator and remove the water pump/generator drive belt.
  10. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  11. Remove the water pump pulley (four bolts).
  12. Remove the timing belt.
  13. Remove the oil level indicator (dipstick) guide tube.
  14. Remove the upper generator adjusting bracket from the water pump (one bolt).

    1. Remove the rubber seals from the water pump.
    2. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and nuts.
    3. Remove the water pump and gasket from the vehicle.
    4. Clean the water pump and the gasket mating surfaces.
    5. Install the water pump.
    6. Secure the water pump with mounting nuts and bolts. Tighten Tighten the water pump mounting nuts and bolts to 13 Nm (115 ft. lbs.).
    7. Install new rubber seals (1) to the water pump (2).
    8. Install the upper generator adjusting bracket to the water pump (one bolt).
        • Tighten the upper generator mounting bracket bolt to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
      1. Install the oil level indicator (dipstick) guide tube.
      2. Install the timing belt.
      3. Install the water pump pulley.
      4. Finger-tighten the four bolts.
      5. Install the crankshaft pulley.
      6. Install the water pump/generator drive belt to the crankshaft, water pump and generator pulleys.
