I'm getting an intermittent "growling" noise from under the hood on my 2002 Taurus. I've been told it's the "air conditioner clutch" and that the entire compressor must be replaced. Can the clutch (onlu) be replaced on this model..?? Thanks.

Any chance this is the "famous" FORD noise called MOOSING - Sounds a bit like a MOOSE ? Caused by a resonant vibration / oscillation in the pipes in and around the Air filter and air intake etc. I know Explorers do it, as do the V6 Mondeos with Duratec engines. Try a Google of Ford Moosing for more info. Modifying one of the pipes can stop it happening by changing the air intakes system resonant frequency to something outside of the normal operating range that causes it.
Hope this helps

More then likely it's going to be your a/c compr clutch hub bearing, Napa auto parts stock's this item part # 5106WCC. The growling sound is the hub bearing, where your serpentine belt ride's on.

Taurusx 2008 air conditioner blowing hot air as of yesterday. Tonight, there is a lot of racket under center and right side of dash (or so it sounds). Since it's dark, I can't see under the hood....

Sounds like your AC clutch has fragged, Take it to a technician as these can be a real PITA to get to and work on. You will likely end up replacing the entire AC compressor as most techs won't just do the clutch and guarantee their work.

I have just purchased a 1998 malabu with a 3.1 engine. It has a rattle when cold. Any ideas? I've been told not to worry.

IAC (IDLE AIR CONTROL) should be replaced. You will be amazed at the difference when you change it.

High dinging or ringing noise Under hood

if it goes away when you turn the a/c on its the a/c clutch plate that is dragging and when you turn it on its pulled into the the a/c compressor and is turning all the time that's why noise goes away, you have to replace the a/c clutch.sometimes you can try prying with a screwdriver the edge that is dragging and noise will go away.

2000 ford taurs a/c dont work it blows cold when i power up the compressor.its running 45 lbs on my gage on the low side.

Hi...
Perform the following basic Checks and Information
1. Check Drive Belts,If belt is intact proceed to the next step.
2. Check for Compressor Clutch Engagement - Turn the air conditioner to the "on" position and set controls to the coldest setting. Start the engine and allow to idle. Then open the hood and inspect the clutch at the front of the compressor, is it turning? "Engaged" if so, the system has enough refrigerant to activate. If the system is low on refrigerant it will not work properly. In this case an air conditioner recharge kit is needed to recharge the system. If the compressor clutch is not turning proceed to next step.
3. Inspect for Refrigerant Leaks
4. Check under dash panel and under hood power distribution center
5. Check Temperature Control Vents - The vents inside your car are controlled by a cable, electrical servo or vacuum servo. If the vent door is not functioning properly it will cause warm air from the heater to exit the vents. To check this start the car and allow the engine idle, next turn the blower motor speed on low, switch the temperature control from warm to cold while your ear is close to the vents. You should hear the door move inside the heater box as it swings from open to close. If not, inspect for a vacuum leak or a shorted motor in the servo, repair the leak or replace the servo motor.
Thanks
