I am having ignition problems with my 4 cyl. 2000 mazda 626. When I turn the key on the key stays on start causing the starter to stay running making scraping sound. Smoke comes out of the steering column leaving a burning smell. I already burn one starter and it looks like my battery is going low too.

SOURCE: rubber burning smell and smoke

It sounds like a pulley froze up. Pop the hood have someone start the car while you are looking at the pulleys, you should be able to see the problem.

SOURCE: 2001 mazda 626 4 cyl engine turns over, but won't

See about getting a fuel pressure test. Or if your bold just go ahead and change the fuel filter. If both fail you might need a fuel pump

The key for my 99 mazda 626 is stuck in the ignition in the acc position. The car will start and run, but the battery does not stay charged because of it being stuck. What could cause it to be stuck like...

To unlock and take off the key, try disconnecting the battery; about the charge problem, its possiblke that you have any loss wires from alternator, or the alternator self go to bad.

My 1995 mazda 626 4 cyl wont start. its getting gas spark. when you turn the moter over you hear like a muffeled noise at the moter not muffler

Your problem could be a lot of things ,,without hearing the noise we have to gess your problems like
1Chech the engine for turning over if not then its the starter bendix slipping and if it is turning over as usual then its could be the starter ring on the flywheel and if so turn key off and turn engine over by hand about 1/2 way around on bottom pully and try starting again and if it starts then its the starter ring.
Engine or Gearbox out job.
Let me know how you get on . Ron

Starts if you turn steering wheel

I will take a guess at this. You can't turn the key until you turn the steering wheel a little to the left or the right? This is usually caused by friction on the steering locking mechanism which keeps the key from turning in order to start the car. If this is not the case then you may have a bad ignition switch or cable head connecting to the switch that is not making contact until you move the steering wheel around and it makes contact allowing you to start the vehicle. Good Luck, RAC
