SUV Engine won't start

Failed to start twice in previous 8 months, but it started up fine both times by the time I had it towed to shop. They said fuel line, electrical, etc, was ok. Since then, it seems I always have to keep the ignition going for a bit longer than I used to, but it always starts. Now it won't start, although I hear the engine cranking. It did rain quite a bit, but not more than other times when it would start, either during or after the rain. Something as simple as checking spark plugs is a 2-hr job by expert mechanics, probably half a day if at all possible for me. Should I just wait it out in case something got wet? Could it be that simple, or is there something else at play?

Have a 1999 Ford Expedition that did something similar. I just waited it out after taking it to the Dealer where they made sure the keys were programmed for the vehicle (of which I have 3 keys that work).

It is possible that something isn't right, but I just used the vehicle until the problem went away.

If they checked the fuel, electrical, etc. and didn't find anything, I think that I can't do any better than the dealership.

My Expediton seems to work ok now. I don't know what was wrong when it didn't start correctly. lol.

2012 Volkwagen Passat has twice gotten stuck in first gear after driving some distance.

next time it happens, stop the car and have it towed to the shop, don't try to drive it or fix it just leave it as it is and have it towed in. that way they can look at it when its not working and or you can prove to them that its actually not working. this means dont shut the car off.. because as you said if you do it will start fine, just leave it run as you have it towed to the shop.

Failure to start. then will start next day. Mazda said it was fuel pump. They replaced $790.00. did not resolve problem. they kept 2 days and said it was battery. Replaced. @ weeks later same problem.

Well, they probably did put on either a bad fuel pump or should've done the relay. There is also a fuel pump REGULATOR that can cause a lot of trouble. Make them keep at it,since their work should be warranteed when they say they've fixed it. don-ohio

HI youtube12 - IT sounds like your starter deed not disengage from the flywheel and
by you driving it caused the starter over heat and short out .
You need to have the electrical sys checked out before replacing starter. OK

Shut truck off. come back later, and won't do anything, lights come on but no clicking at all. done twice to me. first time had towed. next day disconnected battery and hooked back up and it...

verify voltage and start signal to the starter when the truck won't start or click. most likely the starter solenoid has gone bad and will not engage the starter after the engine has warmed up.

Sounds like its a starter problem,if you can pull the starter off take it to an auto parts store,

there are many locations that have equipment to put a load on the starter, and they will be

able to tell if its bad. once you pull the starter off, if you can check the teeth on the fly wheel,

if there is a dead spot, the starter could spin and not engage the flywheel. I hope it's the

starter. the bendix on the starter the teeth that engage the flywheel could also have dead

spot's. and not engage all the time. good luck!

Hello, This is a tough problem to find when there are no Diagnostics. I suspect the problem is due to a term called "Heat Sink"

What this term means is that the engine compartment is getting hotter when the engine is just shut off, than when it is running. When the Tow truck moved your car, wind passed by while the Tow truck moved your vehicle. This helped cool it off regardless of when the car was towed.

A lot of times the heat shields on the Catalytic converters are rusted off. In a pursuit vehicle, they could have been knocked off. This means someone needs to look under your car to see what is missing.

The electric components like the Ignition module, coil, Relays, and fuel lines can be overheating.

Try opening your hood when you park your car at home and then go out shortly afterwards and try starting the car. If it helps, you need to find the component that is overheating and replace any missing heat shields.

I hope my solution is very helpful. You can also get FREE scans at Autozne, Advance, and Oreillys autoparts when you get a Code light.

My 2004 Chrysler Pacifica won't start.

Try grounding the engine, they may have moved, removed, or broken the ground straps.

Take a jumper cable from the black(NEG) post to a bolt or clean piece of metal on the the engine.
And see if it starts.

Also check the connection at the starter, in case they had it disconnected during the repair.

Hope this helps.

Tuff start ,then no start

If fuel filter hasn't been changed lately I would start with that, as well as adding some gasline antifreeze with moisture remover, or "heet" (brand name). do you always re-fuel at same place? Not sure where your at, but you did say, cold, so moisture in your tank, from warm & cold temperatures would definately cause problems similar to what your experiencing. Do you hear any hum from rear of car when you cycle key to on, but not start, if yes, turn it off & back on, 2 or 3 times & listen for same, then try to start & see if it makes a difference. Try the additive first, as I said, but if that doesn't do it, try to get a fuel pressure test done before & after filter change, or ideal would be when it won't start, as we all know, it won't do when mechanic has it. Let's hope filter cures it.

XTERRA 2002 SUV STOPS RUNNING WHILE DRIVING, AND THE WHEEL LOCKS UP, CAN'T TURN THE WHEELS. ALSO, STOPS RUNNING WHEN SLOWING DOWN. THIS IS A FRIGHTENING SITUATION. PLEASE HELP.

Check for a loose wire around the ignition. Also the ground wire from the engine to the body. The steering should not actually lock up, but will be very hard to turn when the engine stops. I assume it idles and starts fine?? But it shouldn't! Frankster016
