Chevy malibu won't crank dashboard functions no theft system issue, turn to on position and makes no sound...could this be the starter?

  • Anonymous Jul 06, 2010

(UPDATE): was able to start engine with screwdriver to starter connection...but could not engage through ignition...theft system light has been on for over a year. Could this be the cause? Somethings blocking charge to the starter. Checked all engine and inside panel fuses...all working. Why cant the theft system be disabled or uninstalled?? If fixed it stops working soON as the warranty for the last fix runs out.

Most definitely sounds like a starter. Try toggling the key to the start position several times a second until the starter operates. I do this to my 1997 Cadillac Deville occasionally as the weather changes without changing the starter (which probably should be done).

I also have a 1990 Cadillac Deville that does this occasionally.

Must be a GM thing.lol.

Yes, the security system can do wonders for starting. Try having this problem addressed at the dealer. Parts are available for up to 10 years at the dealer, I understand.

    Good luck to you.

2008 Chevy Malibu LS has crank but won't start

Did it run okay after the starter was changed? There are lots of ideas in the link, but really, you need a mobile auto-electrician with a pro grade scan tool computer to check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes and Communication issues between modules.

My chevy Malibu 2013 makes a ticking sound when trying to start it .plus the engine light blinks as the engine is ticking but wont start .

Is the engine actually cranking over? or is it just a clicking sound. It might be that your battery is low and does not have enough voltage to turn the starter.

Reset anti theft system 2007 Chevy Malibu

Here are two methods to reset the anti-theft system on 2007 Chevy Malibu:
1st method
1. Put the ignition in on position, let it breathe for 10 minutes, and remove it when the anti-theft system light stops blinking.
2. Crank up the engine; it should now start
2nd method
• While outside the car, press and hold the lock and unlock button together
• Let go when the car honks and the lights flash
• Put the key in the ignition and rotate to the ON position, and leave there for 30 seconds
• Switch on the car, and the anti-theft system would have reset

2002 chevy malibu...can i get a remote starter to by pass the anti theft system

What makes you think this is a anti-theft system problem ? Is the security light lit on the insturment cluster ? When you turn the key to start does the starter spin the engine ? Crank no start ! Or when you turn the key to the start position the starter does nothing . No crank no start . A aftermarket remote start won't by pass anti-theft system . Your best bet would be to take to a qualified repair shop and have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . Before you let someone start hacking up wiring circuits .
DTC B2947
DTC B2948
DTC B2957
DTC B2958
DTC B2960
DTC B3031
DTC B3033
DTC P1626
DTC P1630
DTC P1631
DTC P1632

Do you know what DTC'S are , these would point to an area of trouble an to a fix .

I have a 2003 chevy malibu that won;t start. When you turn the key to on the Theft System light comes on steady ( no flashing). I t used o go into this mode periodically where the Theft System light...

I have had the same problem. This has happened to me three times in the past nine months or so. Per the owner's manual, you turn the key to the on position and wait about ten minutes. This resets the system and when the "Theft System" light goes out, it starts right up. I did this each time and it started right up.

try locking your car with the key and unlocking it with the key, leave it for 30 second or so between the locking and unlocking , the car thinks some one has tampered with it

My chevy malibu wont start. it turns over but wont start. tried new battery, not the problem. changed fuel filter, still the same thing, turns over, but wont start.

Hey Debbie. When a car wont start, there can be many things that can cause this. It can get real frustrating real quick. I will give you some things that it may be. If you are good at cars, you need to test for fuel and spark. Make sure fuel is going to the engine and make sure your ignition is sparking. If you are not good on cars, check these. Make sure your fuel pump is kicking on when you first turn the key. You should hear a humming sound for a second or two. If you do, the pump is working. If not, it may be bad. If you haven't changed the fuel filter in a long time, it may be clogged. A filter is cheap, usually 10-20 dollars. A fuel pump is 100-200 dollars. Check your air filter and make sure the engine is getting air. The filter may be clogged/real dirty. You could check the fuel pump fuse/relay, only if you didn't hear the pump. Your timing belt may have broke. You need to spray starter fluid into your carburetor. You will have to take off the air hose to do so. Once you spray it in, try to start the car. If it starts and dies, you have a fuel issue. If it stays the same and doesn't start, you will have to check the ignition system. This included the spark plugs/coils, distributor, dist.cap, rotor, cam sensor , crank sensor, ecm. I know it is a lot to take in but it could be any of these. Let me know if you know the engine good. There are things you can check, if you know how to check them. The only way to check for the problem is by checking each possibility. If you have a question Debbie, let me know. I am here to help. Thanks for choosing FixYa.

01 chevy malibu won't start, security light blinks but after leaving the switch in the on position for ten minutes it will start is there a permanent solution to this?

I have the same problem on my 2001 malibu. Do a google search for 2001 Malibu Passlock malfunction. You have to have the passlock system replaced, although I've seen many forums where people have had it replaced only to have it malfunction again because Chevy never made a new passlock that does not malfunction for older Malibus. Also, if you get a remote car starter I've heard this will disable the passlock therefore removing the issue of it malfunctioning so you would not have to worry about it not starting.
