The mechanics lied to you. Changing the transmission fluid and screen will not cause any car not to run. Just as you need to periodically change the oil, the same holds true for transmission fluid. Though the fluid is black, yoou state that you have no slippage or nothing out of the ordinary. If that is the case, then you do not need a new transmission. Just have the fluid and screen replaced and all will be fine. Make sure to pick up a transmission pan gasket while you get the necessary fluid and screen. Again, changing the fluid will not cause any car to not run. It is safe to perform the fluid change.

A mechanic I used to take my car to told me that I didn't have to change the transmission fluid in my 2005 Chevy Cavalier. I have doubts as to whether this is true or not. When it runs, it sounds a bit...

These vehicles do require transmission fluid changes, but at a higher mileage. In fact some models come without a transmission fluid dipstick to check the level. It is recommended that when transmission fluid change service is performed, that a fluid evacuation/fill machine be used, commonly known as a transmission flush.

You can change it and see what happens if the fluid is black it is considered burnt . Here the test is it slipping? Then it will need to be rebuilt. If there is no slippage then just go ahead a replace the fluid and the filter

You change fluid because it breaks down from the
heat, one of it's main jobs is to remove heat

Fluid is not a fix for anything

Sounds as though your due for a rebuild

There are no new transmissions

Could be the auto transmision. Check the trans oil at the dipstick. If it is brown with a burned nutty smell the transmision will need overhauling or replacing. There are other possible faults such as overheating or not running on all cylinders. You may have to get it checked out by a mechanic.

My car wont move forward or reverse

Chances are is that the torque converter needs to be replaced. However, the transmssion on this vehicle are only serviceable by transmision shops. No regular mechanic will open up the transmission. When the torque converter fails (clutch and plates shutters to small pieces) the debri flows in the transmision thereby potentially destroying the gears and/or clogging the filter and pump. Go straight to a reputable transmission shop and let them correctly diagnose the transmission.

Civic 92,auto gear box problem

There are no filters to change. If the fluid is brown or black in the transmission you should have it changed. If you have over or near 200k miles on your car you should consider getting a good used one with low miles, but should you call around and see if you can get a free inspection at a transmission shop first.
