What automatic transmission is in a 1994 dodge van

What automatic transmission is in a 1994 dodge full size ram van 150 with 3.9L engine? The drive shaft broke at 65+ mph and destroyed the rear half of the transmission. I need to know which year and/or model transmission will replace the original.

Hi there, The B150 was available in two auto variants - can you please advise whether yours is the 3-spd auto, or the 4-spd with O/D?

  • Anonymous Jul 02, 2010

It is a 3-spd auto, I tried to use the vin to get the exact specs from Dodge but it seems that is the only part of their website that doesn't work, they can sell me "anything" though.

Hi again,

Dodge RAM 3spd auto transmissions (RWD) available for the 3.9L engine were:

  • 3-Speed: A500 (42RH)
  • 3-Speed: A727 (36RH), Sportsman Model

  • If you can't find your model code on the transmission casing, the vehicle build plate (in the engine bay) should have the factory drivetrain code stamped on it.

Failing this, Chrysler/Dodge should have your transmission details on their database.

If you end up replacing the entire transmission, you might as well upgrade to the improved 4-speed. Most Chrysler/Dodge RAM transmissions were a universal fit, but some had stronger internal components to withstand the higher torque of the larger capacity engines.

I've located a link which has more technical detail on the transmission:

Why wont my transmission o/d work

no engine told. size, this tells what transmission sites behind it.
    1999 Dodge RAM 1500????? not VAN. 1500
    2wd or 4wd'/
    5 engines. then.
check all fuses, some have stand alone TCM brain (tranny)
scan the PCM for P07xx error (tranny)
check ATF levels hot, park ,idle, only do not overfill it ever.
ATF+3 (not sure but do check)
    they used 3 transmission then
    4-speed 42RH-RE automatic
    4-speed 46RH-RE automatic
    4-speed 47RH-RE automatic

    42RE , is electronic shifted,
OD gear is dead or just the TCC lockup deaD
best is count the gears more carefully to see truth.
yes 4th gear is OD Geared. 3rd gear is 1:1 lockup.
.74-to-1 for first, 1.54-to-1 for second, direct 1.00-to-1 for third and 0.69-to-1 for fourth.(OD)
    scab the PCM
to see if errors from the transmission show up.
    I bet they do.
the 3>4 shift solenoid must work, .and no pressure errors.
the schematics show an OD switch if not closed OD does not happen, forget about that switch>
if car is 4wd and is in 4wd, many cars/ and truck all shut off
OD in 4wd, by logic inside the PCM (pure) my not be true on the biggest engine not told.

      Types
    1. The 1993 Dodge transmissions could be found in the Caravan, Colt, Dakota, Daytona, Dynast, Intrepid, Ran Van, Ram Wagon, Ram Charger, Shadow, Spirit, Stealth, Viper and W150. Each had a unique array of transmissions best suited for the model's design.
    2. In 1993, the Dodge transmissions varied between 3- and 6-speeds. A 3-speed automatic transmission was available, and there was a variant that included overdrive. The only other automatic transmission included 4-speeds. A 5-speed manual gearbox found its way into several of the 1993 Dodge models, and a 6-speed manual was equipped in the Viper.
    3. The number of speeds and style of transmission may have looked the same on paper, but it did not mean they were all the same. An automatic transmission in a passenger sedan could be geared drastically different from one in a truck. Transmissions may have the same number of speeds, but they may not be geared identically.
    4. Transmissions were used in the 1993 Dodge to effectively transfer power from the engine to the wheels of the vehicle. The power could be passed to the front or rear wheels. Models equipped with all- and four-wheel-drive had power at all four-wheels.

Could be a bad cluster. If one is cable driven, and the other electric. You could have a bad speed sensor in the transmission which will make the speedo not work.

1986 dodge ram 150 tranny problem

Sorry this is not an easy fix the clutch packs in the transmission are slipping, usually caused by wear, but the hydraulic pump is probably getting week. As the oil warms up the oil gets thinner and the hydraulic pressure decreases. Times for a overhaul of the transmission, and if the torque converter can not be flushed a new torque converter is recommended. You may get lucky buy changing the fluid several times, but if the transmission is 22 years old it may not help.
