I have a 2002 jeep Grand Cherokee. i notice a rubing grinding noise when I turn left, espec. if I do a sharp turn in a crowded space. It is starting to make the same sound turning right but only randomly. The steerng feels "stiff" to me at times like the power steering is going. What is this?

If it only goes stiff part of the time, the box is probably OK.

Before considering major surgery:

  • check the power steering fluid level.
  • condition of the fluid
  • condition and tension on the belts
  • check for low or uneven tire pressure
  • check steering linkages for damage (did someone borrow the car recently?)
If none of these check out, then consider replacing the pump.

Did you change the fluid first before you put it in? You might need to flush it out and put fresh fluid in it.

sounds like you have a problem with one of your lines on your power steering or one of its components. the grinding noise could also be one of your pulleys that have gone bad too. check your steering assemby gear box.

power steering pump might need more oil (whining noise). generally power steer pumps take automatic transmission fluid. there should be a reservoir above the pump only fill this a little bit then start the car and turn left to right and recheck level. fluid should only be low if there is a leak at power steer pump/lines or steering rack,

Grinding noise when turning left

brake pads metal to metal, brake rotor hitting rear metal dust shield, wheel bearing or CV joint. any of these can cause a grinding noise, the brake pads would be the loudest.
