Check coolant level and top off with G12 VW coolant only or filtered water.

If you haven't replaced your water pump, chances are it could be the original part (OEM). This use a composite material impeller similar to hard plastic. They are prone to cracking at the shaft connection for the pulley and doesn't spin with the engine. Replace it with an aftermarket part which have metal impellers. I'd advice to invest on replacing your timing belt at this time because the water pump is behind the belt. Also keep in mind to use G12 only coolant (VW red coolant), these are phosphate free keeping the system cleaner. Your A/C when switched on automatically activates the fan to lower engine temp when the compressor adds extra loads to the engine.

My 1998 vw bug temperature light came on red. I checked the coolent level and the tank was empty. I put water in it to get me home. Is water a bad idea? Now the temperature light comes on but now its...

vw beetles do not have a temp gauge so instead when the car is cold the light is blue at normal temp no light when over heating or low coolant red light and it beeps, you need the right coolant for your vw it is pink in color and some napas have it (Not DEX Cool) and you probably have a coolant leak, usually a plastic flang at rear of cylinder head goes bad

An icon came up and i dont know what it means

That is your coolant light. When the coolant is cold (car is cold) it is blue for a moment then goes out.
When the coolant is too hot, it is red.
When it flashes, you are low on coolant. Check the coolant tank level (it is the big ball shaped reservoir) and make sure you are within the operating level (about half way up, there are marks indicating proper level)
