1995 Jeep Cherokee Sport. Keeps overheating. Replaced water pump, hoses, thermostat and belt. Runs between 220 & 240 without a/c on. Have been told it is either the coolant sensor or the fan clutch. Do not want to buy parts I don't need. Advice?

  • Anonymous Jun 29, 2010

It's a 6 cylinder 4.0 liter. When the a/c is on, it heats up quicker, and gets up around 250/260. I havee not been running the a/c lately. And, when it is that hot, the a/c does not blow very cold.

It has over 280,000 miles on it.

Clutch Fan are known to fail over time, but I wold not rule out the radiator. The small passages inside the radiator will clog due to age. You did not mention how many miles are on the Jeep or if the Aux fan is kicking on.

How many miles are on this vehicle? If you keep running the engine in the temp range or over 200 degrees, your going to blow a head gasket.

  • Anonymous Jun 30, 2010

If you have never replaced the fan clutch, I would do so. I would also replace the radiator if this has never been done or at least it has not been 100,000 miles or so. In either case, the engine fan that is on the clutch pack activates when heated, and are known to fail. I'll bet the radiator could also use a replacement, if it has not been done as described. Do both at the same time.

I recommend a new radiator vs a used one. Used radiators could also be clogged. While the radiator is out, thermostat replacement and clutch fan might be a great idea also. You say you used a sealant, if you have not done so yet, do not use it unless it is an emergency. Are you still leaking coolant? If so, from where?

Hi,ThankYou getting back with me.your problem is the clutch fan. This will stop the overheating providing no other damage has been done from running at such a tempture, like a blown head gasket.you can check for a blown head gasket with a cooling system pressure tester. If you don't have one, some of your local auto part store's like Autozone rent them.the way there rental works is you pay for it and when you bring it back thay refund your money.I hope this helps,Thank You for using fixya, iluv2fish...Ray

Overheated. Why won't it start?

I'm not really familiar with JEEP mechanics but if you've replaced your water pump and it's still overheating with full water/coolant level, you should check the thermostat; when it fails, it's a common cause or overheating in all kind of cars

My 1996 cherokee sport runs hot, flushed out the radiator with a liquid cleaner and a water hose, and replaced the thermostat

If you have a thermometer you can do a poor mans check of your radiator. Go across the fins and record the readings if there is a big difference in readings you have at least a partial blockage and your radiator will need rebuilt.

Also check to make sure that your water pump is in good shape. A bad water pump cost me an engine on my 1995 Grand Cherokee.

When I installed a separate transmission cooler it not only solved problems with my transmission it also brought down the overall temperature my engine was running at.

My 98 ford contour keeps overheating i just replaced the radiator and the water pump. And there is no water in the oil. The fans work but it still overheats . What else could be causing it to overheat?

I can't believe anyone would replace the waterpump without also replacing the thermostat. Once overheated, a thermostat is no good anymore. It must be replaced.

But that is not the only possibility. You could have a bad head gasket, without having oil in the water. Only a pressure check can tell. You could also have a collapsing lower hose, as water pump suction causes it to pinch off. You could also have an air bubble from not bleeding it properly when refilling. You could also have a loose waterpump belt. You could have put in the wrong waterpump, as the type for normal V-belts runs the opposite direction of the type for serpentine belts.
There are many more, but that is all I could immediately think of.

I have a 1995 jeep grand cherokee with overheating problems. The thermostat has been replaced and all the belts are in good shape. What else could cause it.

lots of causes , is the anti freeze mixture right?? level good, could be a plugged rad, head gasket leak although not common on jeeps, or poor circulation of fluid, even a collapsing hose, and have the system pressure checked including the rad cap

perform a pressure test on the cooling system,it will tell you if you have a engine overheating problem.
also look at your oil and see if you have water in your oil, test your exhaust pipe for signs of antifreez coming out of the engine.

2003 Grand Cherokee Overheating

This might help you as it looks as though you have an electric fan to cool , there should be a sensor on your radiator hoses upper and lower.they are actually switches triggered by the coolant temperature in side the hose. While your Jeep is sitting idle, shut off the AC as it adds to the heat off the engine not to merntion useing more gas. you should make sure both high and low speeds on the coolant fan work. good luck if this does'nt help check out the post, with more, on the 1995 Jeep heating up..

Intermittent overheating on 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Sounds like a sticky thermostat. Not unheared of even though fairly new. Just double check rad fan comes on at about the 220 mark, and not at 260 mark.
