It sounds to me that the small post or wire going to the starter is touching the large wire. The large wire is the positive battery cable and the small wire is the signal wire from the ignition switch. If the two are touching each other the starter will engage as soon as power is applied and circuit is completed at the battery.
though u hav not mentioned the model and make of the car but commanly the fuse boxes are situated just near the battrey and another one under the steering wheel check ur fuses and relays for negetive earthing if the problem persists check the reverse light connector fixed in the gear box of the vehicle under the car
The power trains engine computer is always on linked to the battery. You will need to replace that before anything else can be determined wrong or burnt out as well
How long did it sit? To long can cause rusting and corrosion on the Negetive and positive connections on your car also check your battery for a charge. Whats happened is one of two things, Not enough power to starter or bad ground in system. Clean all of the grounding points and put a good battery in it
Very possibly you have a bad motor mount. Is the engine missing or running smooth but shaky? If it is missing, then it may be plugs, wires, or injectors, if runs fine but shaky, then you may have a bad motor mount.
