What was the code?
FYI- I just went through this with my 2001 F-150 4.6L. The upper performance was good, or at least OK, but the idle was REALLY rough. I replaced all the spark plugs and gaped them properly, then replaced all the rubber COP boots.. They are about 4 bucks apiece. If they leak, they ground and cause a rough idle. They're cheap and good insurance instead of replacing 8 coils all at once. Then, it STILL idled rough. I replaced the EGR sensor, and that didn't help, either. Mind you I should have tested each module for resistance, but I was SOOO miffed didn't care (kinda silly really) BUT-> The only thing left was the EGR Solenoid> It looks like a 35MM film canister right on top of the engine and attached to the upper Manifold. It has one electrical connector and TWO vacuum lines- one in, one out. The OUT goes to the EGR. I disconnected it and held my finger over the line to stop the suction. The idle improved immediately. I replaced he EGR Solenoid, and VIOLA! DONE. Back to a smooth idle and GOOD performance.
