I have a 1993 Honda Accord..The oil light came on flickering at first...now at idle the light will stay on steady but when driving it blinks...once at idle it stops blinking and stays on steady..Car has been running fine and it recently had new oil and filter change. What could be the problem?
There is always the possibility that you really have low oil pressure when you get this light, at idle the engines oil pump produces the least pressure and if there are problems then that is when it shows up, so have the oil pressure tested by a shop with a mechanical test gage, if the oil pressure is within spec then replace the oil pressure light sending unit on the engine, I don't recommend you drive this until u are sure of the pressure, u can SEVERELY damage the engine is the pressure is really low.

Could be more than one problem. The oil light staying on when the engine is warmed up could be a problem with the oil pump or engine bearings. Its possible the switch for the light is faulty. You can replace the switch or have the oil pressure checked with a mechanical gauge at a shop. The high idle could be several things, but I would be more concerned with the oil light.
First, check oil level....make sure it has enough. If oil level is OK, suggest you have someone hook up a direct reading mechanical oil pressure gauge so as to determine precisely what your oil pressure is.
If this checks too low, I'd suggest a new oil pump and lower end (crankshaft and rod) bearings at the minimum.
Since this isn't something the average car owner would tackle, you should check with relatives, friends, and neighbors to try and find a consensus on a reputable local mechanic.
If you think you might want to tackle this yourself, at least purchase a vehicle specific repair manual and read up on what will be required to perform this task and then make up your mind.
If your engine is idling too slow, the oil pressure would be abnormally low....I suggest that you test your oil pressure, and set your idle speed to specification.
Oil light relates to oil pressure, not oil level. If engine has not been rebuilt, it is safe to assume that it is nearing the end of its life. Low oil pressure light goes off on increased rpm´s , and hence, pressure goes up. You can extend the life a little bit by switching to heavy oils, such as 20W-50, but eventually it also wont be enough, and will start fouling the plugs. Check the oil level, because extremely low levels of oil can also produce a low pressure warning.
1st thing i would do is change the oil+filter check the
old oil for coolant or a gas smell if none present
drive car if it still happens take to your repair shop
and have him/her check the oil pressure with a mechanical oil pressure gauge if the pressure is
good have them install a new oil pressure sending unit they probably removed your's to hook up the
mechanical gauge. hope this helps any other ?
gimme a shout good luck
10 psi minimum at idle and 50psi at 3000 rpm are needed for the light to be off. If you have this check for a bad ground wire and reset the CEL. Good luck...i hope this helps
Sounds like there is an oil pressure problem. Now this can be due to several factors. 1. low oil level in car
2. bad oil pump
3.bad oil pressure switch /sending unit
4. last but not least check oil filter and make sure its not clogged.
worn engine main/connecting rod bearings.
have pressure checked with a manual guage at oil pressure switch for the correct pressure. If that's good then the switch is bad and problem solved.
if it low then you will have to check pump and bearings. Contact if you need more help and thanks for using FIX YA
i had a similar problem with a 94 accord it would idle for about 20min it would be fine, take the car for a drive and the light would come on,i found that the big end and main bearings were worn i replaced them and cleaned out the sump and oil pick up and the problem was solved. I know its probably not good news but unfortunantly it fixed this car.I hope this helps you.
