I own a 1998 Saturn SL and the engine races

I own a 1998 Saturn SL and the engine sounds like it is racing, in park and while driving it. When I took my car in for a smog test the technician said I needed to have my cylinode replaced. The car did pass smog because it does have moments where it idles normally. Will replacing the cylinode take care of the engine racing problem?

There are different kinds of solenoids. Didn't he specify? I am suspecting he means the idle air motor. The PCM controls that with information from other sensors. So your idle air motor or pcm or coolant temperature sensor or throttle position sensor could all cause that. This problem should be diagnosed by an experienced diagnostic tech.

SOURCE: egr valve on a 99 saturn sl

Take it off and look at it internally, See if you can move the diaphragm if not then it needs replacement. But you should just go ahead and replace it anyways since it is a 99 it would just be worth it

SOURCE: 99 Saturn SC1 ''Service engine soon'' light is on.

Did you get the code that triggered the SEL? If you know that, it will be easier to diagnose your problem. You can do it without a tool on the old saturns. Just need a paperclip. :

Use a paper clip to jumper Terminal A and B of the ALDL *Assembly Line Diagnostic Link* which is above your left knee.
Terminal A is an interal ground and is the top right terminal in the connector. Terminal B is directly adjacent and to the left of Terminal A.

Turn the ignition to ON.

All codes are 2 digits between 11 and 99. Codes are displayed on the SES light by flashing the light with short and long pauses to distinguish digits of one code from digits of another. The short pause is used between digits of the same code, long pauses are between codes. Also, each code is flashed three times before going to the next code.

For example, the sequence of code 12 will be: flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause, then repeat 2 times. If Code 12 is not displayed, the self-diagnostic pogram i snot functioning properly.

If only Code 12 is displayed, no system malfunctions have been stored.

Any existing system fault codes are displayed in order from low to high, except for Code 11.

On vehicles with an automatic transaxle and on which exist stored transaxle codes, Code 11 will be displayed last, then the SHIFT TO D2 light will begin flashing transaxle codes of flags.

When all engine codes have been displayed, Code 12 will flash again.

Engine Problem

first thing that comes to mind would be the throttle positioning sensor, or the mass air flow intake sensor on the air intake hose assembly.Symptoms of a mass airflow intake sensor would be very poor acceleration or engine dying when gas pedal is mashed hard. Throttle positioning sensor can give you and irradical idle while sitting still. You might want to have a scan to diagnose the problem.

RPM's race when coming to a stop. Brakes seem to not work well but not sure it if is because of the RPM's racing or if the brakes are bad. Service light just came on - what does this mean? Help!!

Usually the brake booster unit has failed or there is a rather large vacuum leak when these symptoms appear. Engine speed increases do to lean mixture (vacuum leak) and poor braking performance (brake booster does not have enough vacuum to function properly).

I have an 1997 saturn sl manual trans all of a sudden it';s slow to accelerate and the rpm's skyrocket when trying to get any acceleration

Sounds like a slipping clutch. The engine races but the car fails to respond quickly as if it is disconnected. The issue will be worse when trying to ascend hills. There is no easy fix, you need to renew the clutch disc.

My 2001 saturn Sl is turning over but will not start. what could be the reason for this?

Try pulling the engine coolant temp sensor, They often crack not sure why but the ceramic tip cracks makes the car hard to start, the car's idle may race while shifting gears, and often smokes. The sensor is on the right side of the engine when looking at it on the head. Easy to change and get too
