2006 Nissan Xterra Logo

The 2000 Xterra hesitates while driving at normal speeds, 35mph or 55mph. Thought it might be water in the gas. We cycled a tank through, put 10 dollars worth back in and it happened again. This time hesitating so bad it shut the engine down. I am changing the fuel filter today and will test it again. Are there any known issues with 2000 Xterra fuel systems?

SOURCE: Hesitation problem

try cleaning the inside of the MAF sensor and do the following procedure as well.
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

We are having the same problem. We are right now changing the crankshaft position sensor along with the intake and manifold gaskets.

SOURCE: 2000 ford excursion hesitates at speeds of 45mph and 55mph

Could be several things, when was the last tune up? A coil may need replacing on one of the plugs and the catalytic converter could have some blockage and creating backpressure on the engine. Also fuel injectors may need cleaning by adding it to the fuel or a bad injector.

Need to know what the drive cycle

An emissions drive cycle is a series of different conditions you put the vehicle through to allow the computer "monitors" to run tests, and will "OK" each test.
Drive your vehicle from a cold start at different speeds for 5 mins each speed (35mph,45mph,55mph),idle at stop and drive in different conditions in total for about 20mins.
It may take 5 or more drive cycles to "OK" all monitors.

My 2000 Saturn did not pass inspection due to evap. and O2 sensors "Not Ready". How can I fix the problem or how can the problem be fixed?

What is the EVAP code?

The O2 are not ready because it takes some time for them to complete there self check after clearing trouble codes. This will involve a few drive cycles. Once the evap problem has been resoled, the check engine light cleared, you'll have to drive it for a couple of days to get everything in the "ready" status.

000 NISSAN Xterra -- after warming up, loses RPM by 500-1000..... have replaced ignition wires and distributor, checked mass air flow sensor and OK.....

I had a problem on my Nissan Xterra 2000. Symptons sound similar. In my case, it ran fine for a while and then suddenly the engine starts to stumble and lose output. At one point it did not even have enough HP to move. Irregular idling too. Thought it was water in my fuel. Bought water remover from the store and added to gas tank. Problem did not go away. Instead, "Service Engine Soon" light came on. Had to have it towed to the dealer as there was no way the engine could keep up with traffic. Dealer replaced the "Crank Position Sensor" today. Parts $33.00, Labor: $300 (about 3 hrs worth of work). Seems to work fine now but I will wait and see. Dealer also stated that Distributor bearing appears to be noisy and will need to be replaced sooner or later. I will wait for it to go before I fix that.
