I have a 93 volvo 940 that dies when reverse is selected. The engine runs fine in drive but, when put into reverse it chugs and then dies. The car has had some stumbling on acceleration but not all the time.

Sounds like it could be the mass air flow sensor.
Have vehicle scanned for codes and use shop manual to conduct the correct tests on that sensor .

940 volvo comes out of overdrive without touching button

IPDusa.com.  If its similar to a 240 (and it most likely is) you can purchase a block off plate for the solenoid so you won't lose 4th gear (actually its OD from torque converter lockup).

First check for holes or disconnected air inlet hoses, that will give the sensor/meter a problem so it cannot send the correct signal.
