Engine and electrical shuts down

While driving the engine and electrical system has been momentarily shutting down for a fraction of a second, then it continues to run fine. The tach stops working after the event, with the car still running. After stopping the car and restarting, everything is working ok until the next event.
The problem has progressed and now the car will not start.
Would this be the computer.

The best solution is to do a complete tune up with new spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve and oil change.. If this still happen I would get some fuel injector cleaner, or use marvel mystery oil in both your oil(crankcase) and gas tank. You can get mystery oil at walmart..its in a red bottle with black label.

SOURCE: car starts run's 3 seconds shuts down

Your car is equipped with a system called PASSKEY standard on all GM cars and light trucks, try the following procedure to reset the system, the battery being dead will trigger the system.

PASSKEY LOCKOUT RESET GM CARS 1999 UP
1) Put the key in the ignition and turn to the "ON" position. Leave it that way for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes turn the key and take it out. Repeat this process (2) more times (3 times, 30 minutes total) This should reset the passlock system to recognize your key.

SOURCE: car shuts off while driving wont start up

You need to replace your crankshaft position sensor located by the harmonic balacer. These sensors heat up and cut off the engine until the sensor cools down. This happens with age and it is not specific to GM.

The only thing left is the injector or a vacuum leak on the manifold gasket sucking air in and causing a lean condition. Thats is its the only common issue providing you dont have a head gasket issue leaking coolant on that cylinder and the compression and valves are not leaking. The old spark plug should show a coolant issue if present. The white part will be shiney if you have a coolant loss. If the coolant is looking real dark you should have the cooling system checked for gas being pushed into the cooling system on compression stroke thru the head gasket.

My 2002 Monte Carlos lights shut off while driving down the road at night. They shut off for like a second and then come right back on. What would cause this?

Old GM models used to do that, except they shut off for a while longer than a second. Instead of the headlight circuits being fused a thermal breaker was used which over time became weak.

Modern cars use a computer to switch lights and other stuff and the switches inside the car merely send signals telling the computers when and what to switch on or off and all the additional electronic circuitry makes things very complicated. While it is possible your problem is being caused by a bad switch or relay or a faulty connection or bad wiring it is also possible the circuitry is monitoring the current drawn by the lights and if it thinks it is too high is momentarily shutting the lights down to prevent bigger problems in the same way as those older cars.

Replacing the bulbs might help and it could be worth asking the dealer for an opinion.

97 f350 5.8 disconnected fuel line from tanks to inline filter turn on key pump runs momentarily then shuts off only supplying small amount of fuel from either tanks

Generally speaking, its supposed to do that.
The fuel pump(s) is powered by a relay that turns on for 3 seconds when you turn the key on. If the engine does not start and produce oil pressure, thats all the power the pump gets. If you were in a wreck the pump would shut off when the engine dies even with the key on to prevent a fire.
You would need to jumper the relay to make the pump run beyond the 3 second time.

While driving, the car will miss. It seems as though the engine completely shuts down for a fraction of a second three or four times.

This sounds like its misfiring, this can be caused by a bad sparkplug wire or a coilpack thats on the way out, this may be hard to check as it only does it while driving, you can try it in drive with your foot on the brake and the other on the gas and rev engine and see if it breaks up and misfires. you can start by changing the pulg wires and if that doesnt help then replace a coil and drive if it still misses then install old coil and move new coil to next spot until you get the bad one,

1996 NISSAN MAXIMA SHUTS DOWN FOR 1 FULL SECOND!!!

It sounds like your car has an intermittent open current feed problem. Has there been any electrical/component repair or replacement recently? If so, that would be a starting point for diagnosis. Sounds like an ignition switch type problem. If you had an intermittent battery connection, the car would continue to run from the alternator output, but would not cause the warning lights to go through their initial "bulb check" sequence. But if "on" voltage is lost at the ignition switch, or that circuit, it would.
