My 1993 bmw 318I water temp gage rises to the middle(like it should) stays there for a while than shoots up to hot. The thermostat has been changed the water pump has been change the gage sensor has been changed a lazer test of the motor shows the engine actually is hot. The bottom radator hose never seems to heat up. A presure test of the en gine apears good and the heads and the head gasket is fine. When the gage is up in the "hot" position if you shut the engine off it will not restart until the car sits for a period of time it just "cranks". Any ideas?

If the bottom hose never heats up then theres a flow problem. have u run the car up without the thermostat in ?? just cuz its new doesnt mean it works !! also radiators themselves can block up, back flush ur cooling system and check the radiator holds the water it should, if the bottom half of the rad is blocked, this will cause ur problem, the radiator sounds like its ur problem, make sure u blead the system aswell. the 318 4cylinder has a bleaad valve on the top corner of the rad if i remember correctly.

I have a 1993 mercury' marquis. The floor boads of the front part of the car get hot. And the thermostat keeps falling to c and rising to half way and falling on gage. Can u please help?! Thanks

possible no water in the engine and it is overheating
this is indicated by the temp gauge rising and falling
temp gauge sender units need to be immersed in water full time to get a reading so if it goes up that is in water and when it falls back that is in nothing or steam
hot engine would account for hot floor

Heater runs hot then goes cold

Do you have a temperature gage in your instrument cluster? When the temp goes cold, does the temp gage rise? Check your coolant level both in the radiator and the coolant recovery tank under the hood, and fill as necessary. If that is OK, then check your serpentine belt for wear and/or slippage around the water pump. Lastly, if you have a temp gage and are noticing fluctuations in the reading, you may need to replace your cooling system thermostat. Good luck.

HEAT PROBLEM ON 3Y TOYOTA ENGINE

There is a separate T-piece 3way thermostat made by BMW for the old box shaped 318i and 518i cars. It is a separate unit that fits into the water pipes, and not onto the engine. It has a hot water inlet, and a hot water to radiator outlet, and an engine warming outlet. Each outlet has a thermostat. The radiator on opens when the water is hot, and the engine warming closes when the water gets too hot. The temp stays at 85 D Celsius all the time. Works well on my vw synchco bus and subaru 2.5 engine.

My 1997 318I BMW temp indicator would read normal after sittingand idling for approximately 20mins, and there was heat, after riding the guage would read cold and the air would be warm..it would never read...

Had a simular problem with a 318 myself, they are notorious to get air locked after replacing the thermostat, should have a blead screw on the main water hose, start the car and get up to temp then slowly undo the screw until water starts seeping, should be bubbly, persist with topping up the water until water runs clear, do not drive the car untill air lock is clear or it could blow the head gasket£££££
and or radiator.
