if it is a diesel engine ---problem with the governor control of the engine--- fix is have the pump pulled and repaired by an accredited diesel specialist shop
if petrol check for faulty accelerator position sensor or throttle control motor or broken cable
I suspect that the bell housing configuration for the gear box will be different and will require some sort of adaptor plate. Better to replace gear box and motor as a unit . Then all you will have to consider is exhaust layout. Water hoses and engine mounts and tail shaft lengths.
If you got the 3.0 i'd say its the rail oil pressure sensor goin west .
If its the 3.1 check your shut off solenoid on the fuel injection pump as they can fai,l stop the engine then be ok next time you start up .
I have a 1998 Bighorn 3.0L if the wrong grade of oil is used in the motor it miss fires and runs rough, due to the injectors being oil pressure controlled, I have heard of extreme cases causing a failure to start when cold. good luck
