Re: 2000 Plymouth neon replace tie rods
-
Elevate the vehicle or raise the vehicle front on secure
supports. Take off the wheel and tires assemblies.
-
Use a wire brush to soak the tie rod threads with
penetrating oil. Loosen the jam nut on the inner tie rod-to-outer tie rod. Note the
position of the tie rod on the inner tie rod threads with a matchmark.
-
Hold the tie rod end stud with an 11/32 socket. Loosen the nut
and remove it with a box wrench, then remove the tie rod-to-steering knuckle
nut.
- Separate the tie rod end from the knuckle with a puller
tool. Unscrew the outer tie rod end and remove it from the rack inner tie
rod. Note the number of turns to remove the tie rod end.
Install the Tie Rods
-
Position the new tie rod end on the inner tie rod threads. Turn the tie rod
end on the threads the same number of turns that was required to remove
it.
-
Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Put the outer tie
rod-to-steering knuckle nut in place and tighten it with a 11/32 socket
and a crowfoot. Torque the nut to 40 ft. lbs. then put in a new cotter
pin or nut as per your model.
-
Verify the toe setting. Adjust the setting by turning the inner tie
rod. Take care not to twist the boot. Torque the jam nut to 55 ft. lbs.
-
Put the wheels on the vehicle and install the lug nuts.
Tighten the lug nuts to 95 ft. lbs.
-
Take the vehicle off the supports or lower the rack. Check
the wheel alignment and make the necessary adjustments. Road test the
vehicle for handling.
I will attempt...thank you for your response. Will let you know how this worked out.
