Oil gage needle bouncing up and down

As I am cruising down the road, my oil gage needle starts bouncing around between 40 and 60. Normal running is about 40. Is there a sensor that governs this or could it be the oil pump or a faulty gage? Just want to know as much as I can before bringing it in for service.

Thank you very much for getting back to me so quickly. Now 2 of you are saying it most likely is the sensor.

Thank you very much for getting back to me so quickly. Now 2 of you are saying it could be the sensor. I would think any 'good' mechanic would check out the oil pressure also.

There is a sending unit right by oil filtersometimes it get clogged . However, this is a 16 year old car have them check out the oil pump pressure with a gauge.
Oil pump on this car is a pain in the @##%^ to do but its better than a new engine.

I have a 2000 Chevy Tahoe my check gages light comes on and my gas needle floats and my oil pressure bounces up and down but the vehicle doesn't loose power do you think the switch is going bad

Sounds like the wiring harness connection in the back of the speedo cluster is loose. This will cause crazy reading and the vehicle will perform like normal... sound about right??

To much oil in car wont start

Have someone unscrew your oil pan bolt and let some of the oil run into a oil pan

The oil pressure gage started registering 1/4 instead of it's normal 1/2 even at 1700 rpm. I FREAKED! Thoughts?

I have an oil pressure gauge that reads in analog, 0 to 150? something like that, any way, it moves like a tachometer, idle down around 10, revs up to 55, 60 when taking off and then settles down at 35 while cruising, I notice a change with heavier oil. Also, I know it will read 55 lbs pressure with 1 qt of oil in there, I tried it. So the pressure gauge has nothing to do with amount of oil in engine. As long as it is full, It should be ok, as long as it is reading pressure, but if the pressure drops off, shut it down and find out what happened, If it loses all the oil, the temp light should come on long before the oil light.

Oil gage drops to 0

You may have a bad oil pressure sending unit. The kit they are talking about, I believe is a rebuild kit, not the entire pump. Usally the kit consists of a couple rotors and seals. You would take the old parts out the oil pump housing, and install the new ones. But you want to make sure that all the clearances are within specs. I'd try the sending unit first.

Gauge problems with fuel and oil

It is just as likely that the fuel level sending unit in the tank is bad as it is that the fuel guage in the dash is bad. The guage is MUCH easier and cheaper to change; try that first.

My oil gage drops from normal to 0 and then bounces back.

you need to replace your sending unit first. its usually $5 or so dollars. If you still have the problem after you fix that. you may have a more serious problem.
