If just the mounting broke & not the cable also, take a pair of vicegrips or good pliers on visible portion of steel cable & pull inward. If the cable itself is not broken it will pull out enough to open release.

How do I get my bonnet to open the release cable has snapped

You can get a bonnet (hood) release at Dealers, some major autoparts stores and Salvage yards.

Carparts.com is good for Salvaged parts shipped to your door.

The How-to-do area is not always easy to determine. Best way is to go to a Salvage yard and view similar vehicles for how it goes together.

Sometimes you can sneak a socket between the grille features and undo the mounting bolts under the hood. These things are deliberately designed to provide security against theft.

I found some that had rear hinge bolts which could be undone with the hood in place. I found others where the grille could be removed with a phillips screwdriver from the front. Others as I mentioned required removing the mounting plate through the grille slots. The mounting plate had the intact lock mechanism on it and the hood opened with the mounting plate dangling, still locked in place.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice a cheap part to gain access. If the looks do not matter, break off parts of the grille.

How do i open the hood on a 2001 cherokee if the release is broken

Remove both headlights and mounting cans. There are two bolts on each side that can be removed using a 13mm socket. The one bolt goes straight up and is hidden but with socket 3" extention and 3/8 drive rachet it can be removed. The other bolt is visible at the top outside corner of the opening for the headlight in the cowl. You may need to remove some material over the bolt from the cowl for better accessand then use 13mm socket (shallow well) with atleast 9" of extension to remove this bolt. The hood can then be opened as the latching bars and springs will come up with the hood and then can be released from the latches.

How do I open the hood of a Mitsubishi L300 ?

  1. Locate the interior hood-release lever under the dashboard on the driver's side of the interior of the car.

  2. 2

Lift up and toward you on the hood release lever. The lever is connected to a cable that releases the hood. The hood will pop up about 1/2 inch when you pull the lever.

  3. 3

Move to the front of the car and locate the exterior hood-release lever under the front of the hood. It is located near the middle of the vehicle, just beyond where the front edge of the hood meets the body. Lift up on the inner lever.

  4. 4

Lift up on the edge of the hood while holding the inner lever in place. When the hood is up, find the hood prop and raise it, setting its tip in the hood-prop mount on the hood, to hold the hood up while you work in the engine bay.

Hood on my 1995 Toyota Tercel won't open

Someone just successfully helped me with a similar problem. IF the cable is Not broken, ie: still taunt when one pulls the hood release lever in the car, then the latch under the hood is simply stuck. Try this. Have someone bounce/press down on the front center of the hood where the latch is located to relieve spring tension. At the same time have someone pull the Hood Release lever inside the car. This may pop open the front hood. Then after the hood opens spray WD40 on the hood latch to rid the rust which likely is the cause of the problem. BTW...don't know what you mean about the Oil Light comes on. You don't need the engine turned on to open up the front hood, at least not on my model (2door sedan).
