The first thing to do would be to check the coolant level, then make sure the fan clutch locks up when it gets hot,if coolant is full then start the car and run it until it starts running hot then feel both radiator hoses and see if both top and bottom hoses are hot this will tell you if tstat is opening, if only the top is hot then start with a thermostant, also make sure all fan belts are on and not very loose, i've found some of these older bmw's to have bad head gaskets that make them run hot, start with the test ,and check level first.
Hi i have the same problem with mine its just started, there are a couple of things to check first, viscus fan, make sure when you rev the engine the fan is spinning at the same speed, if not the viscus clutch has worn and you will need to replace it, next, thermostat, check to see if it is opening, run the engine, wait till it gets to normal temp ( before it over heats ) feel the lower pipe if it is cold it might be the thermostat, if is hot then its not, the worst one, head gasket ( which unfortunately for me is my case ) if it gets to half way on temp, then all of a sudden shoots up into the red, this will possibly be your head gasket has blown, you also can check this by, if the hoses on the rad top and bottom are pressurizing up but only the top one is hot and the bottom one is cold, that's probably what it is ( nearly same symptoms as thermostat, but if you put heater on inside the car to hot and put it on full blast then the engine cools, then its thermostat ) hope this helps
I have a 1997 bmw 318i. It starts fine every morning and every time it has been sitting for at least 3 hours. If I have been driving and then turn the engine off it it very hard to restart. Sometimes it just makes a click and sometimes it starts to turn over before the starter seems to disengage. If I try to start it 5 - 10 times when the engine is warm it will eventually catch and start.
Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities.
It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then
it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure
or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty
ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.
To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.
