I just bought a 1996 Volvo 850 GLT one month ago. Had the oil changed last week....my friend forgot to put the piece on the oil filter after it was changed, so when I started it, oil shot out everywhere. Now I am having trouble with the vehicle starting. It just does not seem to be getting spark. It turns over nicely. Once I was able to get it to start after holding the gas pedal to the floor, that does not work now. Wondering if it could be the main relay, cam or crank sensor?
Any suggestions?
thank you, Dena
Any check engine lights/codes?, maybe that oil sprayed onto a connector somewhere and caused an issue, most the time the connectors are sealed but if one was broken or old and cracked it could let oil in between the contacts and cause an issue.
im not going to tell you its a cam or crank sensor with knowing for sure you are the one that needs to do that diagnostic, sorry..
anyways that's an intricate problem for sure and many things need to be checked before condemning one part or another.
i have seen coils fried from excessive cranking under no start conditions, they can be ohmed out to see if they are bad, disconnect them and remove them from the car and ohm them out with a digital meter and compare it to spec, ohm out the primary and secondary windings . the crank sensor most likely gets a signal from a reluctor wheel which is a piece of metal behind the crank with pieces cut out of it, clean it off and make sure the crank sensor face is clean too.
i would go in that order, dont condemn a part just because you think its bad. next with the main relay it can be checked or "jumped" but i dont want to suggest how because it could fry something electrical if done improperly, about the best advice i could give with the main relay is try to get it out smell it to see if you smell any burnt smells, and last open it up and check solder joints for cracks with a magnifying glass. if you see any cracks have someone thats good with a soldering iron fill the cracks and go from there.
good luck and any feedback will help in your journey to fix this thing.
dont get discouraged and once again if it has a code start there, even if its a history code or pending

it is the fuel pump for sure. If you can hit the tank and get it to run it is the pump. this drain back (hard start after sitting) is a fuel pump issue as well

Hello,
Have you made sure the rotor is turning in the distributor, as this sound like a cambelt failure.
Sorry to bear bad tidings if this is so.

SOURCE: Volvo 850 GLT's brakes??
if the pulsating in the steering occurs while braking this is an indications that the rotors are out of round and need to be turned or replaced. if they are causing a pulsating while driving without braking it could be the calipers sticking.
your back brakes will be cooler than the front brakes as the majority of braking is done ith the front brakes even on four wheel disc brakes. hope this helps.

The most common cause is either a bad air pump (under your battery tray) and/or a bad SAS check valve which is connected in to your exhaust next to the firewall in the engine compartment. It could also be a bad relay for the motor. Less common, but possible, other bad components are the vacuum solenoid that controls the SAS valve, which is located by the radiator or a broken/leaking vacuum line to or from the solenoid.
You can test the motor by jumping the relay or applying 12v straight to it. If the motor runs it most likely is not the problem. If not, it's likely that there is water in it and you should replace both the motor and SAS valve. The SAS valve is a pain to get unbolted, at least on turbo cars. You can check the solenoid by just making sure there is vacuum going to the SAS valve a few seconds after starting up the car cold, and checking the lines for any obvious wear in the rubber elbows or breaks in the plastic line.

VOLVO STARTED USING THIS SYSTEM IN 1996 AND 1997 850 MODELS IT IS AN AIR PUMP --------------SMOG PUMP TO MEET EPA EMISSIONS THE DIAGRAM OF THE SYSTEM IS LOCATED UNDER THE HOOD AND SHOULD TELL YOU WHERE THE VALVE IS LOCATED THERE ARE MANY ECU SYSTEMS USED ON VOLVOS AND THIS SHOULD PUT YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION IF YOU STILL HAVE A PROBLEM GIVE ME THE 2 BIG NUMBERS ON THE ENGINE MANAGEMENT ECU
